If Dubios is just as bad next year, then the Kings consider trading him but overpaying to dump his deal now especially with all the assets they spent to get him and with his younger age is just terrible asset management. I think they keep him next year and under a new coach and system he bounces back to being a 60+ point guy

The problem is, if he doesn’t bounce back, he holds a full NMC and the return could be very limited given he can choose to only go to one or two teams at that point. If he doesn't bounce back next year, the best (and possibly only course) would be to buy him out

I'd argue that moving a bad contract with 7 years and 60M remaining in money has a surplus value of over two 1st round picks. And the player is young and unlikely to be a candidate to be mysteriously LTIR'd for the rest of his career so there are going to be very limited options to navigate this contract when the Kings are trying to contend with this anchor of a contract taking up 10% of the cap.

With the NMC kicking in on July 1 and the price of the buyout going from 33% to 66% on June 24, I think this trade gives the Kings a chance to escape the deal mostly unscathed. Unloading Dubois for a 1st, B level prospect and taking back a cap dump seems like it would be beneficial to both teams.

Nevermind. This is a terrible idea. After accounting for the signing bonus, the buyout cost is 28M which is territory the Blues absolutely would never entertain.
