My take on Marner

Created by: EccE
Team: 2024-25 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: May 9, 2024
Published: May 9, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't like the idea of giving Marner more than he makes now when he hits UFA a year from now. but I doubt he'd take a pay cut. Thanks, Dubas!

Anyway, before you yell at me, this is pretty much the best the Wild can or will do. Marner has a year left on his monster deal the Wild already struggle to fit under their cap. After a year, Marner could just bounce, if he wanted to. He also has an NMC, so he could dictate his fate. I don't know why Minnesota would be on his list, but not many other teams will be. That might drive his value down. If there is a platable extension in place, the price goes up.

If you want the Wild to add Rossi, another 1st round pick or something like that, I'd be more than happy to move on and let you keep Mitch.

I think by far the biggest barrier is Marner's NMC. Not sure MIN would be enticing to him.

Good trade, but I feel the Leafs likely would want a RD not a lefty but Lambos has the talent that could change Brads mind, the guys I would ask about would be Parker or Spacek in the sense of need but all in all, I like it

Yeah, me neither. But realistically, where can he go if he refuses teams like Minnesota? Top contenders like Florida or Vegas don't have the cap space, 1st line minutes available, or capital to acquire him. If Marner wants to go to a contending team, it's either another year in Toronto or bubble-teams like Minnesota, Utah, Seattle...

Honestly, I don't even want Marner on my team. I don't want to pay and the Wild can't afford it. Sure we could afford it and then be in cap hell even longer. I would be more open to the Wild retaining on some huge deal that lands Toronto more value on a Marner deal. Maybe we swing Rossi for Knies and we retain 50% of the contract. This giving Toronto a massive return on Marner and we get our guy. I could see a future contender paying for Marner and having a year to work the cap space to re-sign him. But a straight trade to the Wild is not something I love. Boldy plays a similar style to Marner and he's younger and cheaper so I'll stick with him. Let me know what Leaf fans think of that. Maybe you get a Western Conference team to pay up what you want and you guys walk away from the $11 mill contract. Rossi would allow you to trade JT and get massive cap flexibility to re-sign Bertuzzi/Domi and a better d-core to help push you over the top.

The Leafs are losing this deal however I would accept it. You get both better in net / prospect pool increases. You also have less of a cap hit too which allows you to go after some of the big named UFA defenceman.

I somewhat understand the Wild doing this. You have one of the best goalie prospects wanting time, you have a decent amount of good defensive prospects and the 13OA would be the first round pick moved in a long time. I just worry it would be hard to keep Marner there just after one year.

That being said, Marner feeding Kap would be sick and both would become even better players.

Understand your reasoning here however the problem is JT value is significantly lower than Marners. The idea of trading Marner comes from the value he would bring back. JT is 35 and closer to the door while Marner is 27 and still in his prime. The idea of Rossi isn't a bad one either but not if i comes with moving Knies

Not sure why we all make the hypothetical trades for Marner. Somehow magically Vegas is going to come up with the trade capital and cap space to make it happen. Marner to Vegas I'm calling it. I don't know how but it's going to happen.

I think its a good offer, Marner will kick butt in Minny and raise his stock! Maybe Ek, Marner and The Thrill on a line, not bad.

Honestly though If I am the Leafs I would rather not take Gustavson and just get more picks or was that a cap dump?

See I would, we need a goalie this offseason and a tandem of Woll and Gust would be better than any of the UFA goalies we could get.

Ok I don't disagree...Woll can't seem to stay healthy anyway...and I guess its better then paying a little more for Samsonov. My gutt is Leafs wait till 2025 for a big time G, there are a few...

You nailed it. Woll has shown he can absolutely be the guy in net, but my god he can't stay healthy .
