Caps trade, instant playoffs

Created by: Eli
Team: 2017-18 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2017
Published: Jul. 26, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Orpik has been on three of the last four President's trophy teams. He was top ten in plus minus last year. He'll get you there. Beagle is the Caps' shutdown center, top penalty killer, and defensive end faceoff specialist. He will help. Chorney is a journeyman defenseman with better possession numbers than the guys Colorado moved on from this summer. But Duchene is an elite talent, so the Caps still throw in a prospect and a pick, even though giving up two more NHL defensemen, after losing three this summer, will drop them to 5th in the East. They take the deal, probably, because it gives them an elite offensive weapon to balance Phil Kessel, even if they have to sign some weaker UFA defensemen to limp through the season. Each team ends up in the playoffs, with a totally different identity. The 'Lanche improve to above average in penalty killing with this trade, and fix their power play with prospects, and Yak.

Caps do agree to the trade and are 5th in the east. The Avs are still a lottery team though.

That's a whole penalty killing unit from the team that finished 2nd best at penalty killing last year, transplanted into the team that was 30th... And it includes the nastiest defenseman in hockey. I know, I know, they're missing a serious offensive piece, but they've also just added Yakupov for a song, who has as much skill, and just needs the right opportunity with the right line mates and supportive coaches to be a star. If Yak plays on the first power play unit and scores 25 goals, and Orpik is given free rein to teach penalty killing, and the young guys keep coming along, this is a playoff club, and a tough one to play against.
