End 2025 MTL

Created by: Sebsmtl
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 10, 2024
Published: May 10, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
***Not too interested in the plausibility of the returns but much more curious in looking at its impact on the cap of the team. (they are all picks) I think I went rather on the safe side for the other team's return.***

Contracts likely handed in 2024
- Slafkovsky
- Guhle
- Xhekaj

Montembault new contract kicking in: +2.15M to the cap hit

The Harris/Xhekaj situation is hard to evaluate who stays if not both. Xhekaj had some trading rumors in early 2024.
Same about Barron / Mailloux - one is likely traded

Salary cap increases to 87.7M as promised.
Pearson, Ylonen, White & Wideman not re-signed. Added to LTIR to remove their cap hit.

Dvorak is likely to be traded at the trade deadline 2024-2025 as he can provide a lot of faceoff wins on a 3rd/4th line to a team pushing for playoffs. With salary retention, it feels plausible that a few teams could be interested if not NJD.

Anderson & Barron could move to SJS. Barron, 1st round pick had his skills complimented by Crosby & Letang early in his career (back in 2022). Feels like he could end on the 2nd pairing (seemingly the opinion of the scouting analyst here at CapFriendly is that he has that 2nd pairing potential). Anderson is a tricky player to imagine a trade. He had some good years & as a habs fan it feels like he can still perform. However, his cap hit of 5.5M might be too much for what he is bringing in Montreal. It seems like SJS could need players on the right wing. He will be a good influence on the young players around him.

Savard could raise again interest at the trade deadline.
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2025 2nd round pick (NJD)
  2. 2025 4th round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Dvorak, Christian ($2,225,000 retained)
2.
MTL
  1. 2025 1st round pick (VGK)
SJS
  1. Anderson, Josh
  2. Barron, Justin
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (MTL)
  4. 2025 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Only trade that is not a deadline one. Maybe more of a summer one. Barron is a proven RD which will likely slot on a 2nd or 3rd pairing. He was a 25th overall and Anderson is a 30 year old power forward who could help out the sharks on the right wing side.

Interested in Barron, but Anderson isn't being moved for less than a firs, and probs doesn't waive for San Jose anyway

Sharks decline I think, Barron’s a decent piece but we need more high-end talent, quality over quantity, and we have enough bottom 4 defenseman prospects. Especially with not knowing where the Vegas pick will be. Anderson’s contract is also too long, hopefully we’re competitive by 26/27.

Dvorak (50%) for 4th sounds about right to me.

(Probably not to NJD though).

If you want SJS to take on Anderson, at this point his value is low. The compensation is Barron, but Anderson bring it down. So I think SJS may take the chance on him, but for a 3rd or 4th pick in that trade vs the 2025 2nd round pick (PIT). So we'd pay at the very least one round increase to move him out.

If you remove Anderson, SJS may think about the VGK 1st for Barron and either the 2025 2nd round pick (PIT), or if we're lucky, the 2025 3rd round pick (NJD).

Barron is the most overvalued guy on here lately from Habs fans.

Why is San Jose adding an unprotected 1st to this?
