Duchene beats Kessel for third line supremacy.

Description
The Avalanche were worst in each special team last year, but they have some good offensive prospects and they just signed Nail Yakupov, so their power play should rebound. The Caps have learned that special teams don't matter in the playoffs when there aren't any power plays, but even strength scoring depth has torched them for two straight years. So Colorado signs Winnik and trades to get an entire unit of the Caps' penalty killers. Pierre McGuire says the asking price for Duchene starts with two defensemen, so to outbid competitors, Washington gives three, plus a forward and a pick. Duchene, obviously, scores 25 goals in a third line role, and Eller scores 20 on the fourth. The Caps finally can beat Pittsburgh, and then have to make a plan for how to take on Edmonton.

I like Duchene for Washington but it will cost more than extra pieces.

In all honesty I don't think the Caps have the pieces or testicles to pull off a Duchene trade...but the GLARING an AWFUL thing here is Jagr for FOUR YEARS!!! Jagr for one year would be a terrible signing...he came to DC over 15 years ago...he plodded around like a cry baby. The Caps had to blow up the entire team because of his BS and it was one of the worst signings in NHL history. That being said. Jagr to DC is a no, and I don't care if he's 20 years younger and made of gold.

They were the second-highest bidder! Sakic decided the cap hit was getting half a million too high and went out and signed Iginla, instead. If anyone knows Orpik is worth about this much, it's Colorado.

It doesn't replace his offense, which Colorado has already replaced. It gives a four-man penalty kill from the team with the best penalty killing to the team with the worst. So it gets them into the playoffs. I wrote that above. Do you have anything to add?

(I had no idea the number of years actually showed up anywhere, and just left it on four after thinking that would get Franson to accept a low cap hit, but let me try to play this off like I meant it....)

First of all, Jagr IS made of gold. He's a leprechaun. That's why he doesn't get older. Or need money, apart from gambling. And at first I put Iginla in there, because I think he's cooler, but then I realized he's already had a chance to play with Duchene, and nothing amazing happened last year for either of them. I just figure there's no way they trade for a big piece like Duchene without "going for it," and that probably involves signing vets rather than committing to youth.

I totally get the idea that depth pieces from a top team should be worth less than a superstar from a bad one. I do. But I've also heard of Joe Thornton, Rick Nash, Wayne Gretzky, Pavel Bure, Marian Gaborik, and Martin St. Louis.

And Colorado last year weren't just bad. They had the worst season of any team since the lockout. A checking center, two defensemen, and a top prospect from the President's Trophy winning team would do more for them than whatever they'll ultimately settle on for Duchene. Not that the Caps couldn't offer more and still win with him. Just that if they know what's good for them, they'll take this deal, sign Winnik, and make the playoffs next Spring.

That was 3 years ago. That's the same as saying Iginla was worth his contract this year when he obviously declined. I see Washington fans desperately trying to trade Orpik because he isn't worth the cap. As for Chorney he's a 3rd pair at best. Beagle is one of the better 4th line wingers in the league but that still doesn't make up for Duchene. Stephenson is a decent prospect but still doesn't make up for it. The 3rd is ok but if you really want Duchene it would have to have a good young dman like Bowey+ another young piece. I get Orpik is a good penalty kill guy and the avs got yak but you would have to pay a team to take opriks contract similar to trades where you see the player+ a 2nd for a 6th. You just simply won't get Duchene for spare pieces

You're absolutely right that most Caps fans see him that way, and are trying to dump him... but MacLellan won't, because he values Orpik's toughness, crease clearing, ability to break up rushes, and simple break outs. He's holding onto a guy who was a cornerstone of two President's trophies in Washington , plus a Stanley Cup in Pittsburgh. Caps fans see him get beaten by faster guys, one on one, and national audiences hear Mike Milbury hate on whoever plays for the Capitals, but, for a guy with no obvious offensive skills, Orpik has put together an insane amount of team success, just by being consistently difficult to play against. If he learned to pass, he could be Chris Chelios. Oh, and he was 5th in the league last year in plus/minus.

Still, I took your advice and tried putting together a deal with Carlson, Chorney, and a couple above average defensive prospects for Duchene. Caps fans shot it down as way too expensive for two years of someone who, to Washington, they would see as an overpaid third line center.

So I'm back to proposing trades for RNH and Marchesault. Like these: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/446752

Appreciate your help. Feel free to post your own ideas. I'd love to keep working together and find ways to improve both the teams we cheer for!
