Ducks Side of a Marner Trade

Created by: Theo_nollaf
Team: 2024-25 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: May 12, 2024
Published: May 12, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is the other side of a Mitch Marner trade I wrote about here:

https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/5115496

I really like this trade from the Ducks side as they already have great depth on defence, (And more coming at #3) but could use an elite point-scorer to jumpstart their offence. I reckon they would give Marner an extension off the bat around 7 years 75 million. LaCombe will be missed in the short-term, but in the long run it will be worth it. The first-round pick is tough to lose as well, but the Ducks already have a great prospect pool, and they have extra high picks this year nonetheless. With Marner, the Ducks build a great top-9 for next year and a formidable top-6 for years to come with Carlsson and Gauthier down the middle, Zegras and McTavish on the left, and Marner and Terry on the right. Worth it!

Otherwise, the Ducks will likely have a quiet offseason with small tweaks coming in free agency and via trade. I think they would be smart to trade one of their picks to next year. I also think it would be unwise to move Gibson, his value is somewhat low, and Dostal is not ready yet. Keep a good goalie while you know you have one. Same goes for Zegras - he's an amazing talent and not someone to give up on at his age.

Could this team compete for a playoff spot?

He's one of yours, and you're not going to land anything substantial past the cap space savings in a Marner deal after his horrid playoff performance, full NMC, and new contract demands.

Leafs fan here, and I think this is a fair trade. Good young defenceman, first-rounder, upside forward. Get lots of cap space to work with aswell. Checks all the boxes

Honestly, yeah. This deal suits both sides as far as I'm concerned. As a Ducks fan, I'm curious what your thoughts are on LaCombe and the future of the defence in general. Is he worthy of being the centrepiece of a trade like this?

True. Near 100pt players probably won’t land you much, an AHL player, a bottom pair Dman and the 28th pick in the draft. Leafs should be greatful for this tremendous offer

Anaheim isn’t paying to rent Marner for a year and we certainly won’t be giving him $12,000,000 to resign

Easy pass

Cool, we've got another Leafs fan who doesn't understand the concept of Leverage and having enough cap space for team depth.

Y'all are straight-up brainwashed by the ****ty Toronto media/fanbase for convincing you that a legit 100-point winger with selke-level defence isn't worthy of a late first-round pick and an AHLer. There's like a 1% chance you guys ever have a player as good as Marner over the next 20 years lmao.

He seems to be developing into a fine 3/4 D, he can play both sides, not the most physical player but makes smart plays and has pretty good awareness in his own end. Nothing you're asking for are off limits pieces, when frames in the context of those pieces AND ~8 million in cap space it makes a lot more sense for the leafs.

The question really becomes, is Marner a target for Verbeek, and I don't think he is. I don't think there's appetite to pay a perimeter player superstar money.

Why does Marner even waive to Ducks in his contract year. He doesn't. All that explanation of why it's such a good deal for both teams, but no appreciation of Marner.

You're aware that all the stars and awards you're quoting are all regular season accolades, right? Where's his playoff MVP? Or any post season accolades for that matter?

It's not about having the best players, it's about having the right ones. You'd think you would have learned that by now. Marner is elite, he's an elite support piece. You don't give support pieces 11 million.

Where's McDavid's playoff MVP? Or any post-season accolades, for that matter?

11 million isn't even that much considering the cap will be in the mid 90s in 2-3 years.

You really want to play "whatabout-ism" comparing Marner, a guy who's constantly accused of not showing up to the playoffs, to McDavid, who has shown repeatedly he is "that guy" by elevating his play in the post season every year? A guy that is capable of driving his own line? A guy who regularly makes it past the first round?

McDavid has shown he's worth the money, Marner has shown he's not.

Marner is equally as responsible for the team's shortcomings as any other player on his team.

Regardless, you're giving up practically nothing in return for a 100-point selke-level winger. You can complain all you want about paying him 11 million, but it's really not that much at all given your situation as a team. If anything, it would be perfect. You can easily afford him now, and by the time Carlsson, Gauthier, and Mintyukov need their contracts, the cap will have risen to like 92 million or something and Gibson, Gudas, Fowler will all come off the books. You'll still have like 50 million in cap space. And you're pretty much giving up 2 players and 1 late first rounder, all which likely won't play a single playoff game in your entire franchises history.

This is a legit no-brainer, completely one-sided deal. And the fact that you actually think the Ducks would decline this because of 'leveraging cap space' shows just how much the media and fan base have completely warped the perception of an elite player to the rest of the NHL. It's actually hilarious.

It's not a matter of not wanting to give those pieces up to acquire a player we want, everything listed in the trade is expendable, it's a matter of we don't want Marner, and you can't seem to get it through your head.

You need to go rewatch (or maybe watch) Miracle. It's not about having the best players, it's about having the right ones, and Mitch isn't. If he was, Toronto would have a cup by now.

This is real life. Mitch Marner is a real hockey player. YOU don’t seem to understand that you have no idea why Mitch Marner isn’t the ONLY reason the Leafs haven’t had success the past 8 years. Even if Marner over performed, we still wouldn’t have a Stanley cup. Our team, this season in particular, was borderline ass. And just because he hasn’t found success in the playoffs on one team doesn’t mean he can’t on another. Matthew Tkachuk was literally a playoff ghost until he went to Florida.

And the reason they are ass is because? They don't have enough money for team depth because they overpaid Mitch and the rest of the core 4. You want to give half your team salary to 4 guys, then those 4 guys are responsible for getting it done.

Yeah. My point is that u can easily acquire Marner without sacrificing your team depth. Not sure what’s so hard about that.

Because we've learned from Torontos mistake, and when one guy starts making 12 million, the rest are going to want big paydays, and then, suddenly, you can't afford the depth anymore.
