In my best Garak impression... "Wait. What? The Hawks send TOR a player who's locked up and in his prime, provide retention, AND send along a draft pick, to get one year of a declining, over-priced vet? This deal treats Jones as if HE is the cap dump, when the exact opposite is true!

"Hawks drop the phone from laughing so hard, accidently (on purpose) blocking TOR's phone number for forever." Sticking Out Tongue

The Hawks wouldn’t trade Jones for Tavares straight up but you want Chicago to retain $9m (6 x $1.5m) and then add a 2nd round pick for good measure?!

First off, neither player would waive their NMCs for this deal.

Secondly is Jones overpaid… yes by about $1.5m per season but the Hawks don’t have cap concerns at this time and as the cap rises over the next few seasons the deal won’t seem as bad especially since Jones is a 24-28 min per game player. As the talent in Chicago increases over the next few seasons, so to will jones production. As a RHD he will be a valuable contributing asset for the next few season.

Tavares is a heavy footed, aging asset who’s production decreased significantly this past season despite being surrounded by one do the best offensive casts in the league. He is no where close to being worth his $11m price tag for next season. Given the fact that there are only a few teams that could even take his cap hit, the cost to move him would be significant.

For me, if I’m the Hawks the Leafs would need to pay A 1st round pick for the requested retention and the fact the Hawks would be using a retention slot for the next six years. Additionally, jones is the better and more valuable player which would be a significant piece for the Leafs for six more seasons, so the Leafs would need to add another significant asset to get the deal done.

No, you don't sound like that. I take your (and many others here) posts as quite informed. I feel grateful to learn from all here.

I just took the cue you offered at the beginning of this thread and tried to make for an interesting, worthy, follow-up post. I'm quite unsure I succeeded, actually.

Cheers

haha. Nah. I was just kidding. You definitely nailed some of my 'go to' inflection/tonality when I am concocting a response to a proposal. You did alright.
