Getting a new goalie and a higher draft pick

Team: 2024-25 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: May 13, 2024
Published: May 13, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade Markstrom, Vladar, 1st round pick 2024, and other 1st round pick 2024 (via Vancouver) to Columbus for Elvis Merzlikens and 1st round pick 2024

Reasoning:
-Calgary gets more security in drafting Tij Iginla (or any other prospect they find more desirable at 4th overall); Elvis Merzlikens may benefit from a change in scenery
-Columbus gets two 1st round picks to bring in more prospects; Jakob Markstrom also provides an upgrade in goaltending; they can keep Vladar or flip him to another team to get more draft picks

New goalie tandem
Merzlikens/Wolf*

Forward lineup (if Tij Iginla makes the roster)
Huberdeau/Zary/Sharangovich
Iginla/Kadri/Kuzmenko
Mangiapane/Backlund/Coleman
Pospisil/Rooney/Coronato

Defence pairs
Weegar/Andersson
Kylington*/Miromanov
Hanley/Pachal

Subs: Pelletier*, Klapka*, Okhotiuk*

This trade only works if Markstrom waives his NMC and Merzlikens does not have Calgary as part of his M-NTC

Jackets decline. Don’t see them being interested in markstrom as he’s 34. They most likely want to get rid of Elvis but not at the expense of 4OA.

Jackets easily pass. We dont need to bring in more prospects, we need higher end ones that we would get with a top 5 pick. We are one of the worst teams in the league and one of the youngest, we have no reason to trade for a 34 year old goalie.

Get over the name, there's a reason his highest ranking is 10th. If he's there at 9th fine draft him, if he isn't that means a better player has fallen to us.

If we’re drafting 4th there’s no way in hell we take Iginla with that pick. Lindstrom, Silayev and potentially Levshunov or Demidov would be there and they’re all better players than him. If I’m being honest I think it would be better if we didn’t get Iginla and draft Catton or Buium if he falls.

Lose all the goalies from the swap and it's a pretty fair value trade. If Columbus has a specific player in mind then it doesn't make any sense for them. But skill wise most scouts have 4-11 all in the same group. So you'd still be getting a high end player. Personally I'd rather the Flames just pick the BPA at 9th.

Not really. Top 5 picks are almost never traded. There’s a pretty clear tier this year with the top being cellibrini. Then tier 2 is levshunov, lindstrom, demidov. Next tier is probably all team preference. No way should the jackets take a late first to move out of 4OA. They need quality over quantity as they already have one of the deepest prospect pools.

From your response it's obvious that Lindstrom is who you want them to take, but among pro scouts a lot of them have him falling outside the top 10. Tier 2 is just demidov and levshunov.

a late first isnt worth dropping from 4 to 9.

It depends on where the pick ends up I guess, could be anywhere from 24-32. It doesn't change the fact that you're still getting a really good player at 4th or 9th though.

McKenzie and NHL draft rankings both have him at 5. Also forgot silayev in tier 2. I do want lindstrom though if levshunov and demidov are gone. Most of the defenseman outside the top 5 are offensive dmen which the jackets don’t really need since they already have werenski, jiricek, mateychuk, and severson

It does matter value wise. Especially when the talent falls off a cliff after the top 15 or so

right but we are getting a better one at 4 than 9. or at least the better chance at a great player and more choices.

The sportsnet guys have him at 9th and 14th. Daily faceoff 9th, the athletics guys both have him at 11th. Silayev was the consensus #2 at one point but has dropped a lot i dont know if his play has dropped off or if other guys have just improved. If the Flames did get 4th I'd be hoping they draft Parekh. I'm hoping oneof Dickinson or Buium drop to 9th. Like I said, outside the top 3, it could be anyone 4 to 11, so unless there is a player they really want its not a bad trade.

You're just getting the player you want, not necessarily the better one.

the better chance at one and more choices, like i said. Its the whole value that comes from picking earlier in the draft. It what you would paying for if you traded up, which would certainly cost more than a late 1st. No team is taking that trade.

In any other draft year I'd probably agree with you.

It doesnt matter if you agree or think this draft year is different. No gm is taking a late first to drop 5 spots and out of the top 5 in any draft.
