For the Blues Fans - Buchnevich

Created by: Samsquanch14
Team: 2024-25 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: May 14, 2024
Published: May 14, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Buch is probably a favorite of mine, as a Habs fan, and I personally would turn down most offers for him (most likely bias). What's your sentiment on him and why do I feel like he's out there on a line for a big fish?

Is it because he's 29 and doesn't fit the timeline, is a UFA after next season and worried about his next contract, you don't like him that much, or none of the above?

Just out of curiosity. Not that MTL would ever offer this, but wanted to know what his trade value is amongst Blues fans.

EDITING FOR TRANSLATION: Offer isn't real. Fully understand Buch wouldn't fit in MTL.

The first bullet for the Blues to dodge is the 8x8 contract framework that they're likely working on. Great player, wrong direction to take the roster. If they break up those talks and put him on the board this summer at 50% I think he fetches a pick in the 11-22 range and a pretty solid young prospect from teams on the cusp. At the deadline the pick is probably later in the round coming from a contender.

An interesting wrinkle is that the Blues have been using him at center. If other teams think of him as a center, history would suggest an even higher price tag.

Bro said , here's the 5th overall pick from less than a year ago AND another 1st round pick AND a 2nd rounder AND a 3rd rounder for a 2nd liner who's 30 and with one year left on his contract and some C level prospect

Other than maybe Robert Thomas, Pavel Buchnevich is my favorite player on this roster. I was advocating for them giving away a 1st to the Rangers to get him, they ended up getting him for less than that. He's been nothing but an unbelievable true 200ft player and if they re-sign him, I won't even pretend that part of me won't be glad he's staying, even if I agree with A_K that it's the wrong direction to go with this roster.

And it is the wrong direction to go. This team cannot have another red arrow on their Capfriendly page for a player that's 30 years old (which he will be when his next contract starts). It doesn't make sense to re-sign him. It doesn't make sense to let him walk for nothing. They can either do what doesn't make sense, or they can trade him. I would prefer my team to do things that make sense.

I would be over the Moon if the Habs offered that, but I know it won't happen. That is a massive package. Ideally the blues turn Buchnevich into something that is high potential top 4 D or Medium portential Top Pair.

So you are saying Buch, Binner, and Colt 25% retained for Marner is out of the question? Just making sure because that seems to be a popular offer from Leaf fans.

Oh for sure, the Blues should be laser focused on adding a 12m winger and filling every hole in Toronto's roster.

Yea BRO, it wasn't just a throw-in trade offer to see what their needs are or anything. "Not that MTL would ever offer this". Everyone would be focused on the "not enough" trade aspect than what I'm trying to figure out. My goodness.

I feel like it would have to be a deadline deal, since most teams that are "contenders" are cap strapped and would be more desperate in giving away a younger, potentially Top 4 D at that time.

I think it's the opposite that's true actually. Never underestimate a GMs ability to convince himself to NOT do a trade, I suppose, but in the summer, 20-25 teams can talk themselves into "we're gonna be in or around the playoffs this year" and thus feel compelled to pull the trigger on a bigger trade. Some rebuilding teams think they're ready to take a step. Bubble teams think they just need one piece to get into the playoffs. Contenders are trying to get better, or are panicking after a flaw has been exposed in the playoffs. A lot of teams have money. At the deadline, things are set, and the market shrinks.

If Montreal is in the same place at the TDL that they were this year, they're not trading for Buchnevich right? But they *might* trade for him now, if they're thinking they'll be better this year. And there's other teams that might feel that way too. Summer seems like the time to sell. I think the larger amount of potential suitors outweighs the increased desperation of a smaller amount of suitors at the deadline.
