Next Year with No Ridiculous Blow Ups or Rantanen Trades

Created by: Anus_McLeod

Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't think the team can cut ties with Nichushkin, even if they want to. I don't think any other team would want that mess, and it's arguably an unethical thing to do if the guy is truly going to make an effort to get his life on track. They need to hope he straightens himself out and comes back a better man. However, they also need to fill some holes and prepare for the possibility that he's done for the year or even longer. Can't rely on someone coming back when there is a good possibility they won't be able to do so (see the Landeskog situation in 2022-2023).

I'm not sure if I left sufficient cap space to where they can accrue enough to add him when he's eligible for reinstatement, but something along these lines makes sense to me. Dude has put management in a tough spot, but hopefully they can keep tabs on things and react accordingly if/when needed.

Yeah, the whole Nuke thing really puts the team in a tough spot. A return in November isn't so far into the season that you could count on using his cap hit on another player; at least not a significant portion of it.

Is Landy supposed to be ready to come back next season?

He'll be eligible to come back about a month into the season, so say roughly 15% of his cap hit is off the books. So you'd need around 5 million to bring him back.

That's if he comes back and if he does so at that time or takes longer. It's just tough to say. I figure they move Wood if the have to, but it still may not even be there. Not sure what the best solution is.

Exactly. And yeah Landy is looking good. He's skating with the team some and in full gear. That's a great sign.

Despite what you say in the description, there is always some team that is going to be willing to take a chance on a player of his caliber. I just cant see them bringing him back, a change of scenery would probably be best for both the player and the team.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I think a change of scenery is likely the last thing he needs. The guy was never comfortable in Dallas and managed to settle in with Colorado.

Now things could change if the lockerroom doesn't want him back, which is certainly possible, but I tend to think they'll move more toward acceptance and forgiveness as more time passes. I have no actual insight, so just my opinion based on what I observe from a distance.

Unless I’m mistaken Nichushkin is the first guy ever to be in the 3rd phase and his suspension is for 6 months at which time he can apply for reinstatement. He is going to have to show a level of being clean he hasn’t come close to showing given that he has had arguably 3 incidents in the last 14 months. I think the league and the Avs mandate closer to 9 months if not a year of clean screens before he would be considered for reinstatement. Regardless I don’t see how he plays next year for the Avs. Maybe in 25-26.

Yeah that’s when he can apply for reinstatement, who knows if he even does that.

This is right, it’s obvious some guys are pissed at him. I think there is a better chance he asks for a contract termination and plays in Russia then him playing on another team in the NHL.

I mean, there's nothing supporting this claim. He didn't voluntarily enter the program this time. He may have never entered voluntarily before, either. He may not yet want to get better. I hope so, obviously, but the path to accepting and wanting help is windy sometimes.

I don't really care what the team does as long as it stays within the bounds of the CBA. It seems to me there is no coming back to playing for this team, regardless of if they support him through treatment. The team has effectively removed any previous presence he had in the locker room or online.

entirely separate of the nuke thing - shouldn't the Avs attempt to sign and play Ritchie? he's already one of the best players in the C this postseason.

It's an if statement, not a claim. I don't know what's going on. It's too soon for anyone outside of Nuke and those really close to him to know what's going on. But that should be different a month from now. The team should have a much better idea of where things stand.

If he's not making the effort, no one is gonna trade for him anyway, so that scenario is pretty much moot. Contract termination is likely at that point.

I think it's a given that they sign him. He might even get a good shot at making the team as opposed to going back to Oshawa. But I'm pretty hesitant to write his name in pen at this point.

Agreed. Way more likely he goes back home than another NHL team takes his situation on before it's resolved with the league.
