  1. 2024 1st round pick (CGY)
  2. 2025 5th round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Comp: Dach trade 2022
CGY
  1. Holtz, Alexander
Additional Details:
Conroy clearly liked Holtz at deadline. If Markstrom is now staying in Calgary, the Flames can still try to make a play to acquire Holtz through a different route, much like Kent Hughes did for Dach. Difference here is that Holtz’s production has been a lot better (1.87 pt/60) than Dach (1.10). Holtz also have a year left on his ELC, whereas Dach was RFA. Montreal had to add an additional 3rd rounder, but since the Calgary pick is higher, only asking for a 5th.

Comp: Kunin trade 2022

  1. Légaré, Nathan
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Caps move a bottom-sixer and open a spot for Miro/Lapierre. Devils add some depth.

  1. 2024 3rd round pick (NJD)
  2. 2024 5th round pick (COL)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Colorado sent two 3rd and a 5th for RFA Georgiev in 2022. Georgiev was an RFA but due a big raise that became hard to include. Devils make similar package for Knight, who spent the year in AHL.

I wouldn’t say Georgiev was due a big raise considering he went from $2.45m to $3.4m

Also Drury fleeced the Avs since they weren’t gonna pay a backup more than $1.5m

Holtz isn’t worth a top 10 pick. He has upside but rn he’s a middle six player

Georgiev wanted more, no? I had viewed it as a cap saving trade, which is the parallel to Florida this summer. They have a ton of guys that will need new contracts.

Calgary GM seemed to think he was worth Markstrom…and plenty of Flames fans see to think Markstrom is worth a top-10 pick. If A = B, B = C, by transitive relation, A = C.

Was it ever just Holtz? I always thought he was the only confirmed piece of a package that they’d put together. I’m not gonna bs, Marky isn’t worth a top ten pick rn

More than his current $2.45m and the Avs contract is pretty fair priced…but he was a cap casualty for the rangers and they probably wouldn’t even have qualified him

Yea i don’t know what Panther fans think of Knight. Is he waivers exempt next year? Maybe they send him down again for a little cap help. Or they move on and probably would need Schmid/Daws for the pipeline

There was a note a few weeks ago saying they want to extend Stolarz. If that is the case, writing is on the wall for Knight.

Yea, also I don’t think anyone saw Bob bouncing back the way he did. Seems like he found his game again, even though he’s still not worth $10m

Can't fathom Holtz having that value right now.

My understanding is this: the original package discussed at their in-person February meeting was Holtz, Venecek, mid-pick for Markstrom (with small amount of retention…I think under $1m). Conroy countered a couple of days later and said take out Vanecek, mid pick. Fitzy said retain more. So then it became Holtz for Markstrom (with around $2m retained). That was the trade that Conroy approved. Markstrom was asked to waive and even addressed his teammates in locker room.

Then ownership stepped in and asked to halt it. At the time, they said it was because of the retention amount. Then eventually, they said they wanted to continue to complete for playoff spot. After the season, Fitzy shed some light on it. Without naming names, he said one organization tried to “extort” him by asking for more after a trade had been agreed to.

Can't imagine that would interest Caps too much. They have plenty of spots open for Miro and Lap. Maybe if you paid a 2nd it would make it worth it but don't know why NJD would do that.

Some may have said. I sure didn't. I think the shock was more at the fact NYI paid the 13ov for Romanov. 13th for Dach was reasonable.

If Dach for #13/#66 was fair…how does one see Holtz for #9/5th as unfair?

What if it was Holtz for #13/#66?

Hey, respect Kirby Dach. One of these years he’ll break out and finally crack the elusive 20 5v5 points reserved for the best of the best in the league.

And he only got to play with Alex Devrincat and Patrick Kane, and then Suzuki and Caufield. How could he be expected to produce

Dach for #13 was reasonable
Holtz for #9 is unfathomable

Not many people (outside of Montreal) will agree on both.

Kirby Dach produce when the other team has 5 players on the ice challenge (impossible)

Dach has got to prove he is not fragile.

If we picked 9th and 10th…Dickinson, Eiserman…would be a good draft day.

I don’t think we could get to 9 from holtz without adding, but I find it hilarious how skewed perception is for any player who’s rights are currently owned by MTL

Maybe, maybe not. It’s appears to be a very weak draft year. #13 in 2022 likely more valuable than #9 in 2024.

Because I don't value the difference between 9th and the 13th the same as you do I guess BUT especially not in this draft particularly. Dach at the time of trade was worth more than Holtz is now IMHO. Also I would MUCH rather have the 9ov and the 5th round in this draft vs the 13ov and 66th in 2022. Again opinion based but no different/valid than yours.

Without hindsight? I think plenty would agree. Go look at the comments from that Dach trade thread. Plenty of non MTL fans agreeing on value. I think you need to remove the past two years of Dach data if we're judging both players fairly. Then by contrast, how many on here would would agree to Holtz for 9th this year? I think you'd be surprised how little support you'd find. Also, there is a chasm between Markstrom for Holtz and 9ov for Holtz IMHO.

You really can't ignore context here though, are all drafts the same? No and people will value pick's in certain drafts more than others. Also position plays a factor here. Skilled but less physical scoring winger vs big mobile playmaking center? I know who im picking. Others can disagree, there is no right answer here without knowing how their careers play out.

I mean you even said you don't think Holtz can get the 9th+5th without adding so what are we debating here? Dach was worth the 13ov+66th obviously by the fact the trade actually happened. I don't think anyone is skewing anything. At the end of the day, it will always be speculative and opinion based.

So its not just fans thinking he was, Habs mgmt did too. Nothing skewed there. Since we don't know for a fact what Holtz is worth we're going to have to speculate obviously. It doesn't mean my opinion is skewed. If Holtz is traded tomorrow for the 9th, I'll eat my words. I just don't think he will be. I guess we'll have to wait to find out.

Also don't do the CF thing of thinking someone automatically thinks the extreme the other way because they disagree. I don't think Holtz is worth 9th but i also don't think he is worth 29th either as a result. I couldn't fathom Holtz landing the 9th only. Start decreasing the value a little and it becomes more reasonable. Seeing as you think Holtz isn't worth the 9th without adding, it seems we're not even disagreeing here. You just don't like the words I used like "fathom" and "reasonable" it seems.
