In a weird way this is a good way for Vegas to load up for another run and then clear cap after next season.

yeah i know it looks absurd but i thought it was mutually beneficial tbh

Vegas clears some desperately needed cap and with Hanifin signing that extension, Theodore becomes completely expendable

Except they already have roster spots to fill with no cap to do it. This will not help. Remember, Liljegren is going to get a raise this year, through arbitration or negotiation. So Toronto has to retain for this to work. I suspect Marner resigns there if this were to happen. And knowing that org, that's where he is going to end up. Then he'll trip over a cactus in February and play video games by the pool at Stone's house with Hertl until the playoffs.

The knights don't need lijegren so they can either trade him, leave him out of the deal or trade another D like McKnabb and sign Lijegren for less.

tears of joy. They could probably get away with saying that he reaggravated the high-ankle sprain that he suffered in March and claim it never fully healed.

There is also the option of the Leafs or another team retaining 2-3M on Marner, so that they could sign Liljegren. The other two roster spots will just have to be filled by cheap players.

Just to be clear, I hope they do it because of how hilariously bad this has the potential of being.
So you leave Liljegren out. The actual cap savings in this trade, if the Leafs don't retain is ~200k. That puts them ~1.1m of remaining cap which is not going to fill the final 2 forward spots with their 23rd ranked prospect pool (that 23rd was prior to trading their #1 prospect to SJ). I honestly don't know how many teams are just waiting around to trade picks for a McNabb. I can't imagine its many.

Two of three biggest problems in Leafmakebelieveland are already gone! If we are talking playoff issues Dubas and Keefe have exited and let us not forget Shanahan and his famous plan still to go...
