A rebuild has been necessary for years.

This team just won the atlantic last season and a rebuild is necessary? How many teams put up a 103 points in a season, win a division title and all of a sudden need a rebuild. People are acting like the habs are the weakest team in the league. I just think its too early to say if they need a rebuild or not. Yeah if they don't make it at least to the conference finals next season, then a rebuild is necessary. But not a major rebuild, as you can't trade Price and Weber, but a "retool". Technically Montreal has never been through a rebuild, unlike other teams. Expectations are always historically high, and no matter who the gm is, whether good or bad, he gets criticized for every move he makes, either good or bad. If a retool is necessary after next season, then its a good time to do it. You have assets that can fetch massive returns. I think if Galchenyuk proves himself at center, then besides Weber, Price, Galchenyuk and Drouin, we should sell high on assets, and target picks, and nhl ready players. I'll throw in a name like Barzal (not saying we will get him), or a player of similar magnitude. But as of now, lets just wait and see what happens. I understand that after last seasons disastrous playoff run, expectations are really high, but lets wait and see. New Coach too smile

Even with the team the way it is right now they are still destined for the playoffs. That cap space will be an asset as the year goes on and teams want to offload some contracts.

The team is weak at centre, defence and has a poor prospect pool. Time to start the rebuild and stop drinking bergavin's Kool-aid.

Yes this team is weak at center, unless Galchenyuk can step up. We might have a poor prospect pool overall, but after the 17 draft, take a look at guys like Ikonen and Phoeling (both play center). Ikonen especially has an amazing amount of skill. I suggest you view some of his clips, as he is playing for finland right now. He looks even better then Lehkonen. In terms of goaltending, McNiven and Lindgren look like future starters. McNiven just won chl goalie of the year. As for defense Juulsen is projected to be a McDounagh/Carlson type defenseman, and looks nhl ready for top 4 play in the next 2 seasons. Mete and Bourque have a great chance of playing in the top 4 as well in the next 2 seasons. Mete had more points then Sergachev did in the ohl actually. We are not weak in term of defense, its just we don't have an elite puck mover. That is a weakness that needs to be filled in, and I'm sure with 8m in capspace, you can do something. No point in starting a rebuild unless we don't get deep into the playoffs next season. And as I said about Galchenyuk, if he steps up into the number 1 center role, this is a extremely dangerous team, offensively and defensively. Also when u make the playoffs almost every season, you usually draft low, after 24, so finding quality prospects is difficult, and if found, they take time to develop. This isn't the leafs, who always draft in the top 5 or top 10, and pick up quality players.

The team is so weak down the middle that I can say this isn't the worst Habs post I've seen. Personally I see the team making the playoffs for the next 3 or 4 years and doing well in the regular season for the next 2 seasons. However, anyone who isn't completely biased can see even with Price at his very best the roster is not a cup contender and would need some serious luck to get past Pittsburgh, and would likely be the underdogs against Columbus, Washington, Tampa and NYR, and pretty evenly matched with Toronto, Ottawa and Boston. So it would be crazy to think with out a couple of trades the team is no where near where they should be with the best goalie in the league.

IMO, if you can't get a #1C by the 2018-2019 season this would be the best bet in some sorts, and try and build around Drouin and Galchenyuk for the future.
