Asking Hawks to retain on Jones brakes any deal proposed. Even without retention , I don’t think Hawks bite.

FYI, that is Seattles 8th overall pick in the 2024 draft.

Personally, I think, if some team is offering a top 10 pick for Jones, CHI can start thinking about retention. But $1M is probably the maximum, maybe $1.25M. And Jones still has to be willing to accept the trade, which I doubt he would go to TOR. There are indications that he might not accept trades to Canadian teams.

Gotta agree w/ @YeahRighttt. The retention on Jones kills this deal. Don't see the Hawks retaining for 6 years on a player they aren't looking to move out in the first place.

Would rather hold onto the cap space and put it towards someone with a higher potential impact than Jarnkrok. Would do Jensen plus a late pick (3rd or later) for Jarnkrok, though.

Agree with my Hawks colleagues about retention on Jones... Even if for low dollars, retention spots are valuable for rebuilding teams. Also, re this deal, I'm just not that excited about Lilypad and Robertson; think the Hawks will have their own, more exciting, prospects begin to move up to the NHL.

I generally think Jones serves some important purposes, that give me pause when considering trading him: stability; minute-muncher vs the opponents' top lines; mentorship, etc.

HOWEVER, if a proposal came in to the Hawks for the #8 OA straight up for him (or even #6 OA, also straight up) AND the Hawks have someone they love at that spot, I think they think long and hard about that.

'Course, that'd then leave a gaping hole on the right side. Maybe sign DeMelo for 4 years at $6mm AAV to take his spot?

Eh... I think lots of things would have to align to trade Jones as this point (IMO).

So who would play top pair right D? Murphy?Lily? I don’t like the idea of either option. Davidson said we need to finish better next year than they did the past couple. Granted that bar is pretty low, but trading Jones & not having a top pair caliber RD in the org. Is starting on the wrong foot. I honestly don’t think they are in any position to trade Jones right now, even for a top 10 pick.

Yeah. Idk. That'd be for KD to figure out, I guess. I'm just saying, for CHI to even begin to consider retention, it takes a top 10 pick being involved. I think for the right price, a small amount of retention could be manageable. Also, a big thing that will automatically have CHI looking like an improved team will be as simple as staying healthy. If they can avoid having a mountain of injuries again, they could maybe flirt with 70 points, with or without Jones. And there are options out there who could eat the minutes and be effective enough. Of course, all of this takes Jones asking for or being willing to accept a trade first.

Agreed, even being middle of the pack for man games lost will most likely make a big difference. Knock on wood we don’t see any sophomore slumps & the “kids” keep developing game to game.
