Tavares Deadline Deal

Created by: ashleyschaeffer
Team: 2017-18 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 28, 2017
Published: Jul. 28, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A girl can dream. The Metro division is tough. If the Isles are on the outside looking in at the deadline, they have to consider a trade or lose Tavares for nothing. Buffalo has assets and a good chance to resign him because he would be 90 minutes from his hometown (Mississauga) and playing with his two best friends, Okposo and Moulson. The money could work, especially since Reinhart is part of the deal. McCabe is a good, young, cost controlled defenseman considering the Islanders only have 3 defenseman under contract next season (4 if De Haan resigns) and a 2019 1st gives them 4 firsts in the next two drafts. Buffalo has Scandella, Antipin, Beaulieu and Guhle as LHD options so McCabe's loss can be overcome.

I see buffalo being anywhere from #6-12 in the eastern conference and at the best will snag a wildcard spot IMO. I don't see how a #1c playing in the #2 role for 2 months can help enough to justify losing 3 young pieces that can help you build for the future around Eichel.

i think this is an overpayment for tavares. yes it would help them in the short term but as soon as free agency starts he could leave and the sabres will have nothing to show for reinhart, mccabe and a 1st. if tavares wanted to join the sabres it would be better to wait until hes a free agent then sign him and also keep reinhart, mccabe and your 1st rounder

That's a fair trade, but how do we resign him? I hate to give up all that for a rental

I doubt Tavares would want to join buffalo. He's a proven #1c and he will be in the 2 spot in buffalo behind Eichel.

Not necessarily
We don't know how our defense is gonna be
And everyone else's point about losing those pieces for a rental are on point
If Tavares makes it to the deadline,
he probably waits to see what free agency will offer

We'd be better off keeping the assets,
and just trying to sign him once he becomes UFA

While I agree with you, trying making 2017/18 roster staying under the cap when Tavares and Eichel will want big raises. Buffalo just has too many other bloated contracts. If Buffalo is so attractive to JT, can't the Sabres just wait till the summer and sign him and keep their young assets?

i would offer this trade now with rasmus asplund instead of cliff pu but the isles wouldn't take it even if they should. if he gets to free agency, toronto and a bunch of other teams that can pay more, like vegas and carolina would be hard to hold off. hopefully being with buffalo and okposo and moulson (before his inevitable buy out after next season) for a post season run will help cement him in buffalo for a long-term but team friendly extension. plus, if you extend kane (which we should) and have tavares on board there's no money for reinhart and extensions for mccabe and antipin. maybe just the players and not the pick at the deadline.

We signed ROR with only 1 year left on his contract. I like this idea, have to give up a lot to get a lot. JT is a much better center than ROR and would make Moulson and Okposo look like all stars.

eichel/tavares/o'reilly/Larsson. If this deal was made, IMO Buffalo needs to build up their bottom 6 as well. Imagine, Vanek with ROR and Pomenville. Sing a few PK forwards as Winnik and King, then we sign Jagr to play with Eichel

I do not think it is necessary to bury Gorges, he was the sabres #1 PK d-man, I like Reinhart and McCabe but this is an awesome team:
Kane - Eichel - Jagr
Moulson - Tavares - Okposo
Vanek - ROR - Pomenville
King - Winnik - Larsson
Pouliot

What NHL team has that much depth at center and has that bottom 6
Scandella - Ristolainen
Beaulieu - Bogosian
Gorges - Antipin

In closing NYI are not trading Tavares, IMO they are looking to make a run at the cup.Trading for Eberle and signing Ladd makes me think they are going all in and they just missed the playoffs last year.
