A different Marner trade that involves Nashville Read the description

Created by: Jacketsman61
Team: 2024-25 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: May 21, 2024
Published: May 21, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So here is the break down

Toronto gets:
Dante Fabbro
Cody Glass
Jusse Saros 50% retained by CBJ
Zachary L’Heureax

Nashville gets:
Mitch Marner 50% retained by CBJ
Marner agrees to an 8 year extension after the trade is completed

Columbus gets:
2025 1st round pick TB
2025 2nd round pick TB
2026 1st round pick Toronto

Now this trade is completed after July 1st. Marner’s bonus gets paid by Toronto. CBJ only retain in real money Saros 2.5 mil but use their cap space to facilitate the trade. CBJ get a bunch of picks that they could flip and weaponize their cap space in a year that they can do so without future repercussions. Nashville gets a high talented winger to help create scoring depth. Toronto gets serious depth while also addressing their serious goaltending issues.

May say it today but tomorrow is a different day. A GM is always looking for ways to improve. A lot of times GM’s will say this to keep interest low.

That's not what he said. He carefully avoided commenting on another team's player who is still under contract.

Marner just isn’t a trotz type of player

Nashville was in the playoffs and you don’t sell off assets to take steps back. The trade that Nashville made today in moving McDonagh was purely a cap saving move. Meaning they are planning something. Probably not this but something.

NSH is grossly overpaying here. They don't even need CBJ to retain on Marner, with McDonagh gone and the other salaries they're trading away here. CBJ is getting way too much for a single year of retained salaries. In the unlikely event NSH wants to do a Marner-Saros trade, TOR can just give someone a 3rd to retain on Saros, if they need to.

"I don't think Mitch is a free agent."

"They have to talk to me I don't talk to them. I read the same stuff as you, that's just rumors"

He can't comment on negotiations around another team's player without getting fined.

The trade was made because McDonagh requested a trade. It wasn't about their cap situation.

I heard it was a cap saving move by Nashville. McDonagh was happy in Nashville. But also was happy to back to TB. Not saying your wrong.

Trotz said today that the move was made after McDonagh requested a trade during his exit interview.

This looks to me like the Preds paying far too much for retention they don't need.

It gives Nashville more flexibility to fill their roster. Duchene’s buyout from last summer hits its peak this summer. There is a lot to like for all teams here.

This is like trying to sell us on dumping Laine for late picks because it "gives more flexibility".

If the Leafs are sending a 1st rounder and Marner out they're going to want more than 3 rentals and a prospect. They're going big game dman hunting for that price.

Plus, as Viqsi noted, why is Nashville giving up so much when they have a crapload of cap space? This is heavily skewed towards favoring the Jackets but ironically handcuffs them at the TDL when those retention spots likely have more value.

This actually favors Toronto. Toronto pays actual money but saves significant cap space to possibly re-sign Bertuzzi and Domi. It gives them the opportunity to try out Saros while not being locked into players long term. They also get Fabbro who could help solidify the right side of the D. All of them can easily be resigned considering they will have Tavares coming off the books next summer.

the only way cancuks accept this is if colubus retains 1.3 million as that is way to much to be giving up for him
