2 hockey trades

Created by: cmarch
Team: 2024-25 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: May 22, 2024
Published: May 22, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Isles move off their captain in Lee and give up a 2nd. Lou has never traded a 1st to dump salary, not even for Andrew Ladd who never played. So a 2nd to dump Lee is more than fair.

Mikheyev is rumored to be out of Vancouver, whether through buyout or trade. Vancouver does need a center and essentially swaps contracts with NYI as both are signed for 2 more seasons. Isles get a fast middle 6 winger and Vancouver gets a 3rd line shutdown center.

Doubt a single 2nd is enough to move Lee to Chicago. A Lee to Chicago deal probably involves two 2nd's, or a 1st to Chicago and a 2nd back to the Isles.

Ladd costs 2 2nds and a 3rd to dump. He literally couldnt play hockey and had 2 years at 5.5M. Josh Bailey, who got bought out, costed just a 2026 2nd to dump. Lee, albeit, the cap is a bit higher is still an NHL player who probably will score 20 goals again and is a leader, will not cost anything more than a 2nd and maybe like a 4th

Maybe to a different team he's worth that little but history shows that the team with cap space determines the return. You're free to keep Lee if the asking price is too high. It really makes no difference to Chicago unless it greatly benefits them.

The buyout of Bailey was a $3.8m total cap hit to Chixago over 2 years. Cost a 2nd. Lee at 2x$7m. A 2nd and a 4th likely won't interest the Hawks. Maybe another team takes that though.

THIS. And, I'll add... There aren't many teams that can easily take on Lee's full AAV for two years; least of all, contenders. The Hawks would have him for two years; he'll be long gone by the time the Hawks are relevant again. Could he provide some leadership for two years? Sure. But the Hawks have that, already.

CHI is in a long-term rebuild, and FAR more interested in long-term future assets that'd come with acquiring Lee than in any short-term benefit. THAT is the calculation you must consider if you're gonna try and sell him to CHI.

Cheers

The main reason the Canucks would move Mikheyev is to clear cap space. I think they’d rather pay to dump him than take a contract back
