The idea was that the Leafs would make a big push to go all in and try to win the cup for the 2018-2019 season while Matthews and Marner are still on their low cost entry level deals. As a result, the 1 years deals were necessary so cash could be freed up to sign Matthews and Marner for 2019-2020 season. The players signing for 1 year only are doing it to try to win a cup. I agree that the Kings would try to get more for Doughty but he is a UFA at the end of the season and by trading him they at least get some assets back or risk nothing if he walks at the end of season.

certainly doughty would get more for the kings, look what rental shattenkirk got for the blues. of course look how successful shattenkirk was for the caps. although non leaf fans (and some leaf fans) think the leafs have to give up marner or nylander in any deal to upgrade their defence. why do the leafs have to give up a piece of their lineup just to gain another piece? the kings were trying to win the last year, and where did they finish with doughty last seasons. out of the playoffs. to think one player, and it this case doughty would automatically lead to leafs to the cup, unrealistic.
