How to fix the roster

Created by: hockeynutter
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 24, 2024

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reasons.... There is a good chance a Marner trade is not realized either because the offer will not help us or because Marner wants to stay.
The reason with Elvis, first Trotz has said one of the priorities is to resign Sarros. Second Markstrom will cost too much for one year and after we may have to pay more than 6 to resign will would then handcuff us with a goalie that is not a true elite goalie. He is very very good and provides great goaltending but he is no Shesterkin. After that, whom is there Gibson? Too expensive and he has been on a big downtrend. Thompson is most likely not available from Vegas. I cannot think of another 1b. By getting Columbus to eat some salary and minimizing the draft capital coming back maybe we can convince them to trade Elvis at a reduced salary for a couple of our smaller prospects.
Elvis has experience with more games in a season and while I think he can be overrated. For about 2.7 million, I can stomach the cap hit and give him a chance especially with the increasing cap.

Columbus would give you Elvis for free, and probably retain up to $2M, but not more. And we certainly wouldn't be paying assets to make it happen, a buyout is actually the more attractive option in that case. We don't really need Voit (got plenty of fringe NHLers and prospects) or Akhtiamov (we already have a better, younger KHL goalie in Ivanov), so they aren't needle movers.

I'd counteroffer Elvis at $1.75M retained for FC. Giving up draft capital just isn't more attractive than what's a relatively cheap buyout.

Not a bad idea either. For Torontos sake a little more at salary retained is better. Either way, this is a trade that can create conversations and options for both sides.

I'd certainly retain 50% for a minor pick. Maybe Vancouver's fifth?

It's an option as stated for both teams. Treliving stated that he believes in woll is best option for #1 but health is a n issue. He needs better goalie depth. I took that as looking at more of a 1b for them than a 1a like Sarros and Markstrom. The only really teams with possibly good 1bs for Toronto is Elvis or Campbell from Edmonton. Do you risk the huge risk with Campbell or go for Elvis whom has shown at least the ability to play a decent good 40-55 games.

I'd definitely go for Elvis for the reason you stated. He's shown he can be a league-average goalie behind a dreadful team. He's a headcase and has worn out his welcome in Columbus, but that doesn't mean he won't go and succeed elsewhere. I could see him thriving with the Toronto attention, for example. He wants nothing more than to be The Guy.

I have absolutely zero doubts he's exactly the kind of person that would thrive in Toronto. Let him be the guy, give him the attention, and they'd love him. He's a rockstar, not just in namesake.
