The Penguins could use better defensemen. Ryan Graves was not hot during the 2023-2024 season. Part of the reason could be bad coaching by then-Associate Coach Todd Reirden. Could Graves rebound for 2024-2025 with better coaching?

Mattias Samuelsson could be a top four defenseman if he stays healthy, plays more games, and does more of the right things on the ice defensively. I am concerned Samuelsson's injury history in a short NHL career could be a concern. If the Sabres trade Samuelsson, they should add a draft pick as a selling point. A third round draft pick should be suitable.

This makes them worse. That bottom 6 is awful and as much as i love Hakanpaa, hes a 1 dimensional bottom pair guy, no reason he gets more minutes than Byram

just spreading out Dahlin, Power, and Byram over 3 lines. Byram would get more minutes than Jani just because of situational play through out the game.

Change of scenery trade involving both Greaves and Acciari is very welcome from me. In this case, it'd be instant yes.

That Graves/Samuelsson aspect of the PIT trade doesn't make a lot of sense to me as it seems like a fairly significant downgrade while also furthering the LHD/RHD imbalance. I'd take Krebs for Accari if only because I believe the former is a fourth-liner (with minimal bottom-six upside) and the latter being a legit, veteran fourth-line center with a lot of traits, like faceoff acumen, the Sabres are lacking in that role.

I like that Roy/Rosen trade. With three years left on his contract at a very reasonable $3M, Roy is a great addition to hold the fort while the prospects sort themselves out. Would Vegas go for it?

Not sure about the Dellandrea/Joker trade, but I lean against it.

I don't mind the Pens trade.

Acciari for Krebs is fine because I wouldn't offer Krebs anything but league min on his contract. If he doesn't want it he can walk. Basically getting out of the Acciari contract. Which isn't bad, but I'd rather have younger players in the bottom 6.

The Graves trade is a swap. Samuelsson would have the same issues Graves had if forced into the same role Graves was.
You can't expect these 6'5 6'4 defensemen to skate with EK or Letang. They just can't. They aren't fast enough to run up and down the ice, and when Letang gets caught pinching or makes a bone head decision they can't get back fast enough.

Graves did much better in the later half of the year when they kept him in the Dzone more often, still getting 2nd pairing minutes.
They really need a 2 way guy who can skate and handle his own end. This trade is more an even swap. Honestly I think Graves is probably the better of the two defense.... when not left out on the island by his teams poor decision making.

I don’t think the penguins gamble on another bad contract coming back for Graves unless it was shorter term or less money.

While I do think they should move on from Graves, it’s not for another overpriced D with term who will need to be spoon fed sheltered minutes in a third pairing.
