Spending Money On Depth

Created by: Chapee44
Team: 2024-25 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2024
Published: May 29, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I usually prefer my rosters far more top heavy with low risk high reward depth pieces but this was an exercise for me to spend more further down the lineup.

Extensions:
Peterka 7M x 8yrs
Quinn 4.5M x 2yrs
Buchnevich 7.5M x 6yrs
Byram 6M x 5yrs
Larsson 4M x 4yrs
Levi 1M x 2yrs
Leaves us at -6M in cap space.
Skinner traded at 50%retnd or bought out next offseason. Replaced by Savoie.
Clifton traded and replaced by Komarov.
Greenway replaced by Helenius.
Could also possibly trade Kevin Hayes to Boston for a feel good story to finish his career and sign a 4C for approx. 1M$ to balance cap. 3C replacement being either Savoie or Kulich.

Mock Draft:
1,16 - Konsta Helenius - RW - Liiga
2,43 - Henry Mews - RHD - OHL

You really think Nabokov will last that long in the draft? I think he goes earlier than that. Either way it’s probably low risk high reward.

Really don't like this on the Blues end.

#11 I don't think is much more groundbreaking in this draft than #16. I know it's impossible to tell beforehand.

But at the end of the day we're getting a bottom 6 C back for a bottom 6 C and retaining while doing it.
Getting a forward prospect which we really don't need
And moving up 5 spots in the draft for Buch.

I get that moving up 5 spots asset wise is probably significant at that point of the draft. I just don't see that being the diffference for the Blues between drafting Dickinson/Buium/Levshuvnov vs. drafting a Jiricek or someone in that tier right below.

You could convince me a lot easier if Ostlund was a defensive prospect of similar caliber.

I think the risk of him never coming over could push him down.
I also really like Harrison Meneghin from Lethbridge in the WHL in that spot.
My hot take draft philosophy is that every 7th round pick should be a dart throw at a high upside (history of good SV%) goalie lol

Thanks for the solid analysis!
Getting up for one of Dickinson/Buium/Parekh/Yakemchuk is what I'm thinking the Blues are doing with this trade here. That's your "elite D prospect" in the deal.

I 100% do it if Buium/Dickinson are available. No questioning that. The issue is I'm not sure that one of those two that solves alot of our issues are available. The Blues have a history of drafting younger guys within the class. That's what leads me to believe they wouldn't be too high on Yakemchuk. I guess Parekh could be considered someone that would be of interest. I just wouldn't be surprised if we didn't put alot of stock on a guy that's extremely offensive like that, although we could probably use it.
