How would you make a Mitch Marner Martin Necas swap more fair

Created by: sensonfire
Team: 2024-25 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2024
Published: May 29, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
CAR
  1. Marner, Mitchell ($5,451,500 retained)
TOR
  1. Necas, Martin [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Marner is a clear upgrade over Necas.

However ...

Marner has 1 year left while Necas is a RFA.

Marner also has a NMC and ultimately decides where he's traded.

And the Leafs will likely have to retain half of Marner's salary.

So, how would you make the swap more fair ?

I wouldn't. Marner tends to have playoff issues, and while Necas does too, he's SO much cheaper long term

May I ask what you're hoping to get for Necas ?

Necas may be an RFA but he needs a new contract and has arb rights. He will likely make 7 million a year

Ideally, they keep Necas and put him on the top line like he wants. Canes can afford it. However, if they do trade him, something like Kyle Connor ideally. A goal scorer

Marner for Necas + is fine value wise.

Problem would be what Marner would want on an extension, likely $11M+, highly doubt he’d get that in CAR.

Also, easier for the Canes to retain Guentzel and deal Necas for defensive help. They are probably looking at a return similar to the Fiala deal (1st + highly regarded D prospect ready to step in), an established, young D or a young F on an ELC or long term contract + pick.

Marner ($10.9m)

For

Necas ($4.5-$5m?)
Fast ($2.4m)
Andersen ($3.4m)
Total cap hit = $9.8m - $10.3m

a 1 year 5.5 million contract and let him build value for next year. He didnt have a great year and I dont think teams interested will have a good trade piece. We will have a lot more cap in 25-26 as well to expand the trade possibilities.

First, Leafs are not likely to retain $0.01; just a preposterous statement.
Second, if Marner is moved - absolutely no interest in Necas coming back. He is nowhere near the player Marner is; he’ll be cheaper but will still tie up cap $ preventing Tre from upgrading D (priority #1).
No idea - nor do I care - what Canes need.
Tkachuk and now Hronek are showing us RFA vs UFA makes little difference; Necas just has to file for arbitration accept a one year deal and then walk to FA; he is essentially in same boat as Marner now - one year until FA.
