Cap Space Hell in VGK

Team: 2024-25 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2024
Published: May 29, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
From some of the talks that have been going around, could the VGK make a move on Marner with the Leafs? This AGM thinks about that what if, and looking at VGK having to move some cap space to sign Marner long term (Around 11.5M$/8yrs) if Toronto doesn't retain salary for 24-25.

I would see VGK need picks, and move Cap either at Draft or on July 1st (Prob July 2nd for Marner since TO would pay his bonus).

I'M also taking into account that VGK have gone and flat out give players for nothing in the past to make room for a potential top forward.

They get at least their first 2M$ cap hit for an extension on Marner.

They most likely will trade to TO Shea Theodore (who would need to move his M-NTC), or Whitecloud if Shea refuses, Hutton and a forward. Moving Roy and Shea and Roy to TO doesn't provide them with enough to move Cap, hence why I propose MTL come in and get Roy for cheap, but still offer VGK something in return.

Roy and Dach can alternate on the wing, it provides HABS with a potential in faceoff wins.

Just a thought after hearing a few rumors about VGK being interested about Marner.

MTL
  1. Roy, Nicolas
Additional Details:
VGK get a 2st and 3rd this year in the Vegas Draft; They are also provided with a prospect that will most likely play in the AHL net season, or be a depth player on their roster for a 1M$ max.
VGK
  1. Barron, Justin [RFA Rights]
  2. 2024 1st round pick (WPG)
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
I would also consider switching the third for CAL's 2025 1st. Hence VGK would have two 1st round picks for 2024 and one in 2025.

if they're in cap hell wouldn't that mean you'd be able to get him cheaper? thats a pretty steep price even if they're not in a cap crunch

Evans + 2nd or a 3rd for Roy is the max I'd offer.

VGK would be looking to replace Roy in their bottom 6 too. Evans would probably be their target with him being a cheap contract.

This is what it would take to get Roy out of Vegas. A massive overpay…

Agreed, but if I toss someone with a 2nd, SOME VGK fans will come here and indicate that I have taken in large amounts of dr*gs.. While an overpayment it would most likely be something good for the HABS.

Let's keep sight that I think Barron is done with the HABS and will be tagged as a AHLer since HABS are looking to Reinbacher, Mailloux and Engström first. So providing him with a chance to look at a team that would like his style of play, and low cap hit is considered a trade mark of Hugues throughout the league and players. Give the player a second chance, and they will talk about you in a positive light when other players ask you how their time there was like and if they should consider playing there.

The WIN 1st is late, so this trade for a 27yrs old NHLer from QC is a win for them. These picks can give you an NHLer or players who never crack the league. SO in a sense I think HABS would benefit from having a veteran player who's still young, and signed for three years (Incl this one).

The 3rd is to ensure the trade goes through and sends Roy to MTL instead of another team who could try to match.

Not saying you're off, but the only issue I see with this is that you're giving them cap hit which is what they need. At 1.7M$ trading them Evans gives them only 1.3M$. Giving them Barron offers them the possibility of trading him again, OR sign him to a two way contract (9750K$) and play him in the AHL until he's better on the defensive side of his play, or sign him at 1M$ to 1.2M$ and have more cap space.

The other point of the first vs 2nd as you say I explain a bit higher. But I'm not saying you're wrong. I more than likely start with a 2nd and 3rd with Barron and may end up with a 1st and 3rd plus Barron.

The reason a trade market for Barron is difficult, is because your statement in bold isn't possible. Barron requires waivers now. VGK couldn't just send him to the AHL, he'd go through waivers and most certainly get claimed.
And the reason Evans would interest VGK is because if they were to move Roy, they would still need to replace him. There's not much internal, so Evans is probably cheaper than what they would have to sign similar players to in free agency. Sure they don't "save" as much cap space from moving Roy, but they would have to spend money anyway. Evans at $1.7mil is better than having to pay... let's say... Teddy Bleuger (who put up similar numbers to Evans) probably around $2.5mil+ aav deal in Free Agency...

Then, like I stipulated, they can sign him at 1M$ to 1.2M$ and have more cap space than Evans for a 7th defenseman who's RHD. I think they have Howden, and can start playing Brisson who gave them some good number last year for his short stint in the NHL and very good numbers in the AHL.

So for 1.975M$ they replaced Roy but gained an RHD and it's just 175K$ over Evans.

Again, it's not wrong to say Evans can get their attention, I'M just playing off of the cap and most possible savings without hurting the team. If both players needed to come up and pay at 1.975M$ vs one at 1.*M$ which you'll need to bring up someone, may as well have Barron at 1M$ than Evans plus another one at 975K$.
