Draisaitl And Marner Team Up In San Jose In 3 Way Trade

Created by: KingExLeafs
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2024
Published: May 29, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This could be a scenario given by Draisaitl and Marner to their respective teams: either we walk for free in 2025 or trade me to San Jose this summer for whatever package San Jose decides to give. San Jose could just wait 1 year and hold onto the 4 assets given up in this trade, but they might value the extra 8th year in contracts with Draisaitl and Marner more strongly.

Just to be clear, the Sharks are giving up effectively 4 1sts for 2 guys that won't waive to play for them, and definitely will walk in free agency?

This is a made up scenario. But what if they want to play there? They just got the 1st overall pick. They could be competitive really soon if they both join.

Definitely never going to happen but imagine going from a pile of garbage to this overnight:

Celebrini Draisaitl Marner
Granlund Smith Zetterlund
Guschin Couture Bordeleau

The dcore would still be by far the worst in the league and they would still miss the playoffs

Under any other coach they would be cap dumps. Under Keefe they will be very useful vets like they were on the Leafs. Familiarity in a new environment is important. This is a good trade for Keefe and New Jersey.

Cool. They still aren't worth their contracts and so NJD will not be paying a 2nd and 3rd for them. future considerations maybe

If you want to ignore that the SJ blue line would struggle in the AHL, sure. Fowards for days... working great for the Leafs all these years.

After they see this trade, Zadorov, Carrier, and Walker will sign with SJ instead of Toronto.

With what though? Those guys just ate up $25m of the just cleared cap and will require at least another 5-6 to re-sign.

The current balance is $37m, w/Couture in LTIR. 29m if he is back in the fold. A Vlasic buyout puts the 2024 total at about 32.2, make it 31.3 after Celebrini's ELC. The Marner, Draisaitl, Campbell deal above leaves 6.8m with 6 roster spots left to fill. Couture on LTIR makes it 14.8 and 7 empties. The total above for the 3D, which is probably a little light, is 13.5. So 1.3m for the remaining 4 roster spots.
I think Carier and Walker are doable, but have to leave Zadorov off and fill 5 spots with league mins. Then hope the cap goes up a **** ton in the next 3 years.

Addendum: I forgot a Campbell buyout frees up 3.9 the first year. Still not enough for Zadorov + the remaining spots, but it will allow something better than a league min signing.
