Leafs 24-25 - Mitch stays scenario

Created by: Truelou
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 30, 2024
Published: May 30, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm not looking at 2024-25 as the Leafs being a true cup contender, but building towards 2025-26 as being our real shot, when:
- we're off JT money
- we've figured out Mitch (staying/going)
- we'll have Cowan and Minten up on ELC's
- we'll have figured out what we have in Woll & Hildeby

Key points to this roster:
- we all want Domi back on a long term deal. faceoff % was elite in the playoffs. Serviceable 2C for now
- would love to have Bert back but if Mitch stays, I don’t see how we sign him
- there are much better RHD available this summer in free agency than next summer, I think we have to take a shot (and possibly over pay either in AAV or Term) at a true first line pairing RHD.. I'd love it to be Montour, hometown kid, but there's also the Pesces, Roys, Walkers out there to consider too.. so spend that money now, despite having less cap space to spend, because next summers FA RHD look bleak
- resign Lili / Robo / Dewar on short term bridge deals (I’m not tied to Lili.. just hadn’t thought of a replacement solution there)
- give Jones a pay bump to come back for one more year as net insurance

Goals:
- give Knies top 6 minutes (earned)
- get Cowan in (i don't see how he doesn't make it out of camp)
- Sign the big RHD
- develop Woll/Hildeby

so that for next off season we can either go big game hunting for a true starting goaltender (Saros, Ullmark, etc), or for more forward depth (Konecny, Bennett, etc), or both

Totally reasonable, well laid out plan. Cowan - at minimum - gets 9 games to prove he can stick; what a steal he’s looking like.
I hope we can get Montour for that 🤞

Hildeby as #1 on the Marlies would be better than a 3 way split on the Leafs.
With his 840k plus Jones 1.5m the Leafs would have 2.3m for a better backup than Jones.

I suspect both Cowan and Minten would not get enough playing time with the Leafs so for development purposes they are better off in Junior or AHL. Minten will be in the AHL this year and I would expect him to get some callups, helping to build towards your "next year" scenario. As for Cowan, I would rather see him in junior until after the World Juniors, then perhaps a callup, which also works with your "next year" scenario.
I like the Domi/Marner line but perhaps add Jarnkrok in on the left and find a new 4RW. I like the idea of giving Robertson another year too, see what he can do with it, but the Leafs may not give him the chance.
Defence is ok, you added a few and elevated Liljegren, which perhaps is a good idea to force him to get better or force him out.
Webber as 7D is fine, likely his salary is representative of who ever is there anyway. Webber may surpass Benoit this year.

Overall I like the scheme. You allow for the growth of key players like Cowan, Minten, Webber and Hildeby, while challenging some question mark players like Robertson, McMann, Holmberg, Liljegren and Woll, and still give the team a chance to win this year.

likely going to get a 4th or 5th but that is not as important as moving his salary out.

Yes, I think it is reasonable too. I suspect Montour will be resigned by Florida before July 1 but perhaps Pesce or Zadorov in his place. Going to be tough to fill that spot regardless.

It's legitimately hilarious how many people think taking a miniscule amount of faceoffs in a tiny amount of games means domi can hack it as a top 6 C amd he's absolutely brutal at the other stuff that makes a centerman a centerman

Yeah I'd agree with you, but with Tavares still under contract and money being tight in 24-25 I listed him here as "serviceable". Hoping management spends on the blue line this year (when more premium RHD are available) and can address the center position next year (when the Leafs budget is more flexible)
