NSH declines. PIT should NOT do the CAR trade. Yikes.

Although nyquist probably won’t sniff 70 points again he definitely has a lot more value right now than smith

If Smith was a fair bit younger then I'd consider it but they're basically the same age so it just doesn't work out at all.

Smith's more expensive, coming off a down season as opposed to a career best one, and NSH already knows Nyquist has chemistry on the top line. Even if Smith were 4-5 years younger, I still don't see the upside in it.

Younger player on a down year that is typically a 50ish point player vs an older player on a great year but is typically a 50ish point player. Normal production years are similar so you hope the younger player comes back around and extends at a reasonable cost vs the older guy who likely comes back down to earth some but do you plan on extending Nyquist who will be 36 when the extension kicks in?

Personally, I think it might be good to cash in on Nyquist's great season and cheap last year. This deal ain't it because smith is just as old

Absolutely not. Thank him for his service, and move on. Ideally there'll be an Evangelista or a Kemell or whoever ready to step in for him a year from now.

I don't agree with cashing in on Nyquist now, when NSH doesn't appear to have an immediate successor to him. They can always move him during the season, if a young gun can steal his job. Or at the deadline, if the Preds are out of the playoffs. Even if he regresses to career average production, it'll be difficult to replace that at the same cap hit with a free agent signing (and any decent UFA signing will require a longer term contract too).

I wouldn't be completely opposed to seeing if Smith could bounce back in NSH - in theory. It's not an experiment really worth expending any assets for though. If he made much less than what he makes now, and was available on waivers, I'd give him a shot. He's not desirable otherwise. NSH could get Zucker back for another year, for less than what Smith makes.
