Canes pass easily

Often injured, still expensive and 1 trick pony isn’t a canes target

Do not see Hughes giving an almost 8 mil max term deal to a player who has not been anything more than a 45-55 point player consistently. IMO if the Habs acquire him he will get a 2-3 year 5-5.5 mil prove it deal first, that is how every GM should approach it as well

So Montreal pays Harris and a late 1st for Laine, but Carolina pays Kotkaneimi and Necas for Laine. But this totally isn't a homer arrangement.

Absolutely not. Zero reason whatsoever for the Jackets to do anything even distantly resembling this garbage.

Columbus and Montreal are in the same spot in terms of rebuilding. Columbus was an actual dumpster fire this past season and Montreal finished exactly one spot higher and that was because of OT wins and good goaltending.

MTL fans are as thirsty for Laine as Leafs fans were for Jenner at TDL. Do you really want to be Leafs fans?

Not a chance from Columbus. Not moving Laine unless we get an upgrade or a 1st-liner return, otherwise we keep him and hope for a rebound. No incentive to move a player that's been nearly ppg for us when there's no cap crunch and his trade value is at an absolute low.

Good luck with that - At this point Laine depreciates in value like a car...

He has not played a full season in 5 years. You can get a lot of future for him - but no equivalent 1 for 1... no chance for an upgrade unless CBJ adds.

(In all fairness, I think he is a good hockey player - and I like him a lot, and I understand were you are coming from)

It's mostly future going to CBJ and MTL retaining also AND taking KK.

Basically - CAR could not afford to do a 1 for 1 with Necas against Laine. Habs would come in to send future to CBJ in exchange of Necas.

Can the value be tweaked... absolutely

It's a non-starter. Laine, when he's been healthy here, has been a near-PPG top-line scoring winger. We're under zero pressure to move him or his cap hit, so if we trade him, it'd be for a top-line near-PPG scoring winger type package. This is not such a package, and frankly we don't need the Various Random Extra Futures anyways; we've got our prospect pool largely built and just need to develop the kids we have and get the right mix of guys on the roster.

I think recency bias is at play, too. He had a terrible year this past season because of two dirty hits that knocked him out for the season. But he's played the majority of games even if he hasn't played a full season each of the other years here, and has performed pretty well.

I'm not expecting anyone to take a chance on Laine, but I'm also not expecting Columbus to move him. But it would take a good offer (like a 1st-line return) to move a guy who's been a 1st liner when in the lineup. I could also see conditional picks (like two 2nds, and one upgrades to a first if he plays 60+ games, the other upgrades if he scores 25+ goals, for example). Something to mitigate the risk for both teams.

It's all about mitigating risk; there's high risk for an acquiring team that he stays injured or can't regain form. There's medium risk he bounces back elsewhere and Columbus sells low on an asset we should have held onto. But there's zero risk in Columbus keeping him, his trade value won't go much lower, and we need a player like Laine anyway. That's why we should keep him instead of selling low.

That is an entirely fair point.

I agree with the conditionnal picks that may mitigate risks. My understanding is that he had alcohol/drugs/mental health issues - not a hockey play injury. Because, a dirty hit does not devalue a player in IMO.

Again, not sure about the 1 for 1 - but a decent package is to be expected.

He's in the Player Assistance Program, and the official reason is to focus on mental health. There's no real drug/alcohol concerns that we know of, or at least that have been made public.

Anything beyond "mental health" is pure speculation, but he did lose his father unexpectedly in November. Between that, and frequent injuries/illnesses disrupting this year, I really don't blame him. Just hoping he can come back in a good spot.

Same, he looks like a good guy... and losing your father must be incredibly rough - so i don't fault him for that.
