Revised Offseason Blueprint

Created by: Letsgosharks
Team: 2024-25 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 2, 2024
Published: Jun. 2, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Deciding not to make many Flashy Purchases yet
Moves:
Forwards:
- Keep both Bordeleau and Gushchin, likely decide which to move after this year
- No Forward UFAs, not worth overpaying any
- No Couture - take on Pageau's contract - still a decent 3c just overpaid

Defense:
- Bring in a Vet on an okay contract - DeMelo
- Move out Rutta and Burroughs to clear out the slight jam we have

This Year:
- Probably Swap Bordeleau and Gushchin around in the lineup to see where either fit
- Don't oversell at the deadline - it doesn't hurt to keep Granlund around if he continues his play

Lines:
- Eklund - Granlund - Smith
If Eklund and Granlund continue their play toward the end of last year, this line will be fine, but they will need to because I imagine Smith will be able to score but will be a liability in the defensive zone

- Gushchin - Celebrini - Zetterlund
Could be a pretty good line; give Gushchin his deserved chance after being a PPG in the AHL; he will definitely be hungry

- Bordeleau - Pageau - Kostin
Serviceable 3rd line, Kostin to balance out size

- Bailey - Sturm - Kunin
Again, not a terrible 4th line

D-Core:
- Mukhamadullin - DeMelo
Muk's got some serious potential; pair him with a reliable top 4 to develop him properly; obviously, not an elite first pairing, but this has the potential to be a great fit; at least, Let Shak run the first powerplay unit

- Ferraro - Benning
I kind of forgot Benning actually played well for us, stay at home pairing should be good defensively

- Thrun - Emberson
Emberson was Thrun's 2nd best partner last year; now is that because Emberson was carrying him? I don't really know, but they played well together. Let Thrun run the 2nd powerplay unit

Future:
- Make the decision regarding Bordeleau and Gushchin
- Attempt to Keep Granlund around, but IDK how realistic that is
- Keep spots open in both the Forward group and the D-pairs for the youth to grab over the next 1-3 seasons

I’m close to 100% on this team. Great post as always!!!
I do think sharks should attempt to grab 2 top 4 D.
I love Mukh but right now I wouldn’t put a rookie on the top pairing as it may destroy his confidence and slow his progression.
If couture is healthy I would still grab Pageau if the Islanders are willing to pay to move him as an insurance policy for both Granlund and Couture. I am hoping Couture is healthy as I badly want him to center a line with Smith and Celebrini to show them the ropes and work with both for a year before they transitions to our 1/2 C pairing. But that’s out of our control.

If we wanted to have kept Burroughs, we'd have just kept Burroughs

Thanks! Perhaps we throw Ferraro - Benning out as our top pairing as a pure shut down pair, or sign another top 4 like you said

Having a line of Celebrini - Couture - Smith would be amazing, Im just not all that hopeful he is able to return, but fingers crossed

Players do recover from this kind of injury but it takes patience and time and I am hopeful the off-season gives him enough! Even if he is only 75% of the couture we saw in 22/23 still would be a good player! Plus the mentorship and knowledge he could pass on is invaluable to the sharks. I think both could learn a lot from him.

I think the Ferraro Benning pair could be a good idea! But I worry about Benning Hip that wasn’t a simple surgery and those type of injuries and surgery take a Little mobility speed and power from a players stride and he was a fringe 4/5 D to begin with, fear he comes back more like a 6/7D than a solid 4/5D

Man, Having Couture back on the roster would be such a breath of fresh air for this team, I do worry a little bit about Benning, but I thought that he was solid in his time with the sharks, I am a little hesitant to sign 2 UFA dman to create a future jam but we will see

True! But Inwould rather have a logjam of good D giving the prospects more time to develop than what we have now! A log jam of underperforming D who are just blocking opportunity for the younger guys.
Personally as much as we don’t want to look at LD is Grier could find a way to get Skejei and Montour without overpaying for 5/6 years I would be over the moon! Then next year and in 26 sharks focus their 1st on a LD and RD to be the future top pairing by the time those deals are up those potential guys would be ready to step in being around 23-25 years in age!

Hmm, I wouldn't go both of them, but I would be down for Skjei, Thrun can play on his offside as weirdly enough Ferraro was his best pairing this season. If we go for two top dman I would go Skjei and DeMelo

I love the positive D upside Demello gives and would be onboard with this! Or Roy from LA

W roster.

Smart not to go out and make any huge, flashy UFA offers yet. It’s a little boring maybe but I think this is probably one of the better outlooks for the team in the long run.

Thanks!

Yeah, I think this is realistically what happens too, keep the forward roster spots open so the youth will be able to grab them when ready. Sign a dman to help Shak develop, as I think he has a higher upside than we may think
