If Marner wants to be stubborn and not waive

Created by: Brad_Treliving
Team: 2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 4, 2024
Published: Jun. 4, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Marner has every right to not waive his NMC and remain a Leaf. From the report of Pierre LeBrun, looks like Marner is not getting traded and Darren Ferris doesn't want an extension either (thank god)

What's stopping the Leafs from putting Mitch in the press box? I would rather lose the trade / walk for nothing then to have an entitled brat on the team

Marner has every right to not waive.

The NMC was negotiated into his contract.

Just like Mats Sundin negotiated his NTC into his contract years ago and he would've waive it.

Why do Leafs fans get so angry when they won't waive?

They're not breaking any rules. 😆

100% that Marner has every right to not waive but there are always two sides. Who's stopping the Leafs from putting Marner on the 4th line (5-10 minutes a night) or even better the press box?

He doesn't have to waive but he doesn't get to decide his playing minutes

Where did he say he is angry? The leafs also have the right to scratch marner and let him play 30 games on the 4th line playing 8 minutes a night if they want too to. Rights go both ways. Marner should not have dressed for 1-2 playoff games he was not one of their best 12 F the way he was playing.

I really hope Berube gives Marner a hard time just like he did with Kyrou

Matthews played like sh$t too in some games, same with Willy. Are you holding them accountable? Just a weak and lazy argument to pile on one guy but what can you do ; Leafs Nation is full of irrational fans 🤷🏻.
Also, great idea to sit one of the best players in the league - sucking up $11M in cap space - in the press box 🤦🏻.

Leafs Nation is the biggest and most passionate fanbase in the league. I get that - just from a pure numbers perspective- it means we’ll have more than our fair share of irrational nutbars; thanks for carrying their flag so consistently.

Marner has never decided his playing minutes.

He's not the head coach.

What are you talking about? 🙄

I remember years ago most fans called Steve Yzerman a playoff choker.

Until Detroit started winning Cups and then he was called a great leader.

Only difference was Yzerman became a better 2 way player and had a better team around him.

Fans piled on Ovechkin for years.

Then he won a Cup and was called a great leader.

Funny how most Leafs fans like to blame 1 player for losing a playoff series.

Did you run out of Justin Holl's?

and we don't owe Marner anything either. It's not one sided bud, Leafs could play their cards too

Actually they can't.

With that NMC Marner controls everything.

He doesn't have to waive it.

He can play next season and then walk away as a UFA and Leafs get nothing in return but a mountain of cap space.

Marner is soft and disappears when the going gets tough. I wouldn't even pay this entitled brat $6M. I hope Berube makes him write a list just like Babcock

Always good to get thoughtful, objective analysis from the cheap seats. There is an argument re. Marner’s postseason performances - but the same applies to whole team imo 🤷🏻.
Not sure how / why you feel confident commenting on his personality though. You couldn’t possibly know what type of person he is - that’s just nonsense. I’ve never heard a teammate or coach speak poorly about his work ethic or attitude.

So he's going to enjoy the press box and try to make a case to other teams why he deserves $12M after putting up 0 points in 0 games played when he hits FA

Marner won't spend 1 second sitting in the press box unless he's injured. 😆

And he also won't have a shortage of teams willing to pay him Matthews type money in UFA. 😁

There's plenty of teams who would be happy just making the playoffs.

That's one thing Marner has figured out.

Or you know… Leafs still want to have a good regular season. Marner puts up another 90pts season because he’s a good regular season guy, disappears in the playoffs again. Flips the bird to a fan base that really treated like him like garbage for years (and probably even worse this upcoming season) , and gets a major payday with another team.

This really depends on if Shanahan and Treliving want to be the villains in this situation or vilify Marner instead.
They can scratch him until he agrees to a trade, hurt their reputation across the league for doing that kind of thing to a player.
Or they can be the white knights, a “do right by the player” and have the fanbase and Toronto media turn on Marner.

So I disagree that Marner has all the cards. Shanahan and Treliving can be pricks to force a trade. Just have to wait and see if they have the guts to do it…

I don't mind seeing a villain story here with Tre and Shanny, change is needed around this culture. Leafs gave Mitch everything he ever wanted

- Got the coach fired (Mike Babcock)
- Gave him first line minutes with Auston Matthews w/ zero accountability
- Gave him the "A"
- Gave him PP time
- Gave him PK time
- Protected him from the media. Forced Sheldon Keefe to walk back his comments when criticized
- Gave him a NMC

What a 🤡 rebuttal. Guy misspoke, he doesn’t strike me as an accomplished speaker. - most of them aren’t. If you think his teammates don’t like him 🤷🏻, they’re all pretty good actors then.

Stick him in the press box until he agrees. That’ll work. His agent will make public fuss that the team isn’t honouring the contract, but big deal. Marner needs to play, it’s his contract year.
Like I said in my previous comment, doing that would make Leaf’s management look bad, and probably burn some bridges with players and agents.
