Description
Let's imagine Marner isn't moved, what can the Leafs do with the cap space left? This roster implies no trades (though I'll get to that later), so all adds will be done through free agency. All cap hits and term are based off Evolving Prospects projections (via The Athletic), except for Dakota Joshua, since his number (2x$2) seemed too low. Brossoit in goal would be my top choice for a tandem with Woll, thought Stolarz would work too, at a similar number. The biggest change is on D, with a whole new right side. Rielly finally gets a top-tier partner in Tanev, McCabe and Roy should be a really solid second pair and Benoit gets paired withe the experienced Cole. Would I prefer a bit more puck moving? Yes, but it's going to be tough for the money available. The lack of changes up front are concerning to me. What can a 36-year-old David Perron contribute? Can Dakota Joshua build off a strong season leading an energy third line? With this lineup there's not room for an extra player on D or F, which is part of the reason Nick Robertson isn't included here. If the Leafs don't move some salary out (Reaves, Kampf) I don't see this forward group as an improvement on last years'. Liljigren isn't on this roster either, will he be moved? He has arb rights and I'm guessing he's not getting less than $3 million, which seems like too much for a guy who hasn't ever got his footing with this team. Overall, I like the improved defence, but I'm not sure there's enough puck moving. The forward group is arguably worse than last year, but I'm being too negative, as a guy like Easton Cowan could come in and change things up.

Thorough explanation, mostly makes sense to me except:
1/ zero interest in Perron, he’s washed
2/ Robertson has earned a spot in top 9 imo
3/ I think one of Bert or Domi are coming back meaning probably only one of Roy or Tanev can be signed
4/ not sure about Cole but if not him Edmundsen, Lybushkin, etc

Dakota Joshua is not a centre- at least swap him with Holmberg.
Perron is not a bad signing but maybe for the 3rd line. Rather see Knies up there and McMann on the 2nd line.

All fair points, MitchJr. I added Perron to the mix because of the Berube connection and partly for his strength on the powerplay, which has been a serious problem in the playoffs. He had 17 goals and 47 points last season, more points than Bertuzzi and the same as Domi. He's also cheaper than either of those guys will be. Ideally I'd like the Leafs to find a way to move on from Kampf and move Holmberg down to 4C, which would free up money and a spot and dollars for Robertson. It does raise some issues with the PK though. I'd be ok with Boosh or Edmundson, I just don't know if either are a good fit next to Benoit.
