Why would the Canes trade the hottest trade piece on the market for a 1st rounder, when they have so many immediate needs?

Take a second and think about this…you traded for Necas and gave him $49m (7x7). Would the Sabres trade Thompson for a mid-1st?

Canes can use 11 OA for further trades, nothing is preventing them from it. I am not looking into 3-team trade scenarios.

Necas is not on the same level as Thompson, Thompson plays on much more important position. Thompson`s contract is below his value, because he signed it in bad moment for him. So, no I wouldnt trade Thompson for 11 OA.

What Canes are looking for ? Can they get it with 11 OA in 2024 draft?

Wouldn’t they just be hoping to draft a future Necas in the draft at that position? Not saying that’s a bad thing but it doesn’t do much for them. They’re probably still looking to package Necas for an upgrade as their preference.

Sabres have future assets, they are looking for next season top 6 winger or established, defensive 3C
.
Where Canes need upgrade ? I still assume, them having 7mil Necas on 3rd line is luxury, they cannot afford.

2C or top 4 RD depending on pesce. If they don’t trade him he’ll get a 1x6 and get top line min next year which they’re open to doing and should satisfy most of what he seems to be asking for.

Futures are fine and maybe they go that route but it’ll depend on what else they do this summer. Won’t be the first intention.

I thought they are set on C with Aho, Kuz, KK and Staal. And I doubt Sabres adding Jokiharju to 11 OA would move a needle on Necas. Jokiharju is nothing fancy, but he would cost half cap space Pesce would and would eat ice-time every game.

Have Drury too but none of those guys beyond Aho really give much confidence that they can handle 2C. Drury Staal KK are all good 3C options. Kuzy could potentially take 2C after a full offseason and camp with the team but still not a sure thing given his play last few seasons.

Jok is fine but I still don’t think the plan is to get multiple pieces for Necas. Either keep him or move him in a package for an upgrade.
