Perfect Offseason

Created by: GoCanes
Team: 2024-25 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 6, 2024
Published: Jun. 6, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is a retool despite a difficult cap situation

1) Re-sign Guentzel to an 8 year deal - this lowers the cap hit a bit as the total deal is likely higher than what other teams will be able to offer over 7 years. The last year or 2 of the deal will hurt, but we have 6-7 years to figure that out. Jake is elite and a much needed/perfect fit on this team.
2) Re-sign Jarvis to a 2 year bridge deal - we need cap space next season and will pay the higher AAV after 2 years when some big contracts come off the books
3) PK becomes 1A, Freddie becomes 1B (if healthy, I would project a 50/32 split)
4) Trade Necas for R Andersson - I know Andersson is incredibly valuable. But reports say the Flames are in on Necas and the Skjei negotiating rights sweeten the pot along with the best RHD prospect in our system not named Morrow. The draft compensation and/or negotiating rights could be off by a bit
5) Sign Lindholm as the much needed right handed C. His value has dropped significantly over the last 6 months, but 7x7 seems to be at/above his market value and he gets to play for a contender. He's also a good fit for RBA's system and is defensively responsible. This atones for the mistake in letting Troch leave in a similar circumstance. This contact could also hurt in 6 years, but our cup window is the next 4-5 years.
6) I think KK could become a good 3C one day. But we need his cap space off the books to keep Guentzel and Lindholm now. In this exercise, KK is dealt to the Utah. But the Islanders/Canucks/etc... could be the team. He still has value, his contract will be reasonable for a 4C in a 3-4 years and the acquiring team can buy him out for almost nothing for 3 more years. A true low risk, high reward trade. Worth a 3rd round pick next year for Utah. We send a 5th so no one freaks out. He's not a dump given what I explained above. He has value and someone will gladly give a mid/late pick for him if they have the cap space and ability to player him higher up the lineup than the Canes.
7) Burns will finish his contract as a 3rd pair defenseman - He will partner with Kulikov who is a "stay at home" and should be a solid pairing. Kulikov is another Russian to lure Nikishin. This move also gets Andersson on the top pairing with Slavin to eat minutes and keeps Orlov/Chatty together.
8) It's not listed yet, but Alexander Nikishin essentially becomes our trade deadline addition. He comes over as soon as the KHL season wraps in April and he potentially plays in the playoffs. In '25, Burns is gone and AN likely plays with Orlov (Orlov plays the right side) as our 2nd pair. He could also play with Kulikov (who also can play the right side) for a year. In '26, he plays with Morrow as our 2nd pair.
9) Kuzy is still on the roster and is moved to LW for now (he is allergic to faceoffs), but plays on the 2nd line with the defensively responsible Lindholm and Jarvis. But he could easily be moved to the 4th line C or LW position like he was in the playoffs and is a weapon on PP2 and regular season shootouts. Martinook and Nadeau could play a middle 6 LW role in the event that RBA gets tired of Kuzy's defensive intensity. He's another Russian to welcome and persuade Nikishin to cross the pond.
10) I have Nadeau and FUS on the opening night roster, on separate lines, playing with trusted vets. You could sub Blake in for FUS if you'd prefer. These ELC guys on the bottom 6 are crucial. They can play sheltered minutes and grow as the season progresses (much like how Jarvis was brought along as a rookie).
11) The taxi squad is loaded with solid NHL ready/backup forwards in case Nadeau/FUS/Blake need additional seasoning. You could swap in Lemieux and Comtois at any point and be fine.
12) Morrow is the 7th Dman. He plays in Chicago until there is an injury. He's the first call up, but both Coughlin (RD) and Smith (LD) are also NHL capable extras.

I think you could argue that this team (particularly with Nikishin) could potentially be better next April than the team that just got eliminated. Losing Necas hurts, but Lindholm may be a better fit with the offense. We will need some production from our top prospects in the bottom 6. Our defensive nightmare works out ok with the addition of Andersson and the demotion of Burns (paired with Kulikov and or Nikishin). Trading Pesce, Skjei and TDA for Andersson, Nikishin, and Kulikov is a much better outcome than I would have imagined going into the offseason. We also avoid overpaying Dmen into their late 30's with these moves. Orlov will be better in year 2 with this team just like most Dmen (Skjei/Chatty/etc...). PK will either grab hold of the 1A role or we will be goalie shopping in Feb/Mar.

Essentially Necas for Andersson and if Calgary was in a different situation maybe but, if Calgary moves Andersson I hope it's for futures not a guy that will ask for a trade in 2-4yrs because he wants to win in his prime and be part of a rebuild

Agree with most of what you said but think you’d have to add a first somewhere in the Andersson package and just drop the third coming back for KK. I think teams are still interested to a certain degree but his value is pretty much nothing at this point and if you need the cap space teams are going to be aware of that. Think FC or a late round sweetener is realistic for him.

Overall tho I like the team and think this could be fairly realistic.

#PassonNecas. He’s overrated and we have what he brings in house already. We need more Centres and Defence, so this trade proposal is counter intuitive
