Very bad from islanders, good for De Haan..
Islanders loose one of their best D's in a year.
IMO I'd gave him a 5 yr / 4.5m

its absolutely great for De Haan
if Tavares doesn't stay then I'd agree he might bounce but I don't think his angle is to leave I think its just to get the funds snow wasn't going to give him. so he settled.

The Islanders just screwed themselves. They should have locked him up for a longer term

I think they tried to, but de Haan wanted to go short term, have a good year, then sign a larger contract next year. Therefore, I would guess this is de Haan's last year as an Islander.

Not a great signing, as it's only for a year, and they could always re-sign him ... maybe they want to wait and see how he does and if he plays good they sign him, if he doesn't play good enough they let him go ... and even if he and Hickey leave the still have Leddy, Pulock, Boychuk, Pelech, and Mayfield. They'd still likely need a #2 after than though, and maybe they could move out Pelech for an upgrade, or someone else.

also, as much as i voted for 'no', at least they don't have to give him 5M.

They won't have to give him anything next year because he probably isn't going to re-sign with them.

What's wrong with staying there? It looks like they're leaving Barclays Centre soon anyway. And JT wants to stay there too, though i guess that's different because he's like, 'the guy' for that team ... he is their superstar, so obviously he wants to stay, but just because they have bad ice and a bad arena (i'm guessing that's why you think he wouldn't want to stay), it doesn't mean he wouldn't want to stay.
