Trade back for a G

Description
I’m loving CHI’s trade up early fresh philosophy.

Here’s another idea. I actually like Mrazek at that price over all of Markstrom, Ullmark, Saros etc etc.

When I finished the trade. I saw a boatload of cap space to play with but only one year of flexibility. Similar to the goal with Toffoli last year, grab a top six winger with one year left on the deal.

I do believe there would be conversations with Chicago about a trade down before they gave up 10th for a goalie.

That said, this deal is a woeful underpayment considering the quality at 10 vs 18. I think it would be more than the Islanders pick and Chicago’s second round pick.

Depending on what "chart" you believe. Moving from 18 to 10 is worth Pick #37 all by itself. No players or retention involved. Link below for source. Adding the CHI 3rd means it's a middle of the road 2nd round pick. Is Mrazek 50% retained for 2 years worth a middle of the road 2nd round pick? I think the retention slot alone is worth that, but who's to say?

354.44 - 248.82 = 105.62 Round up to favor the Devils.

105.62 - 32.76 = 72.86

I love the concept of a chart for the NFL draft, but it almost always comes down to the specific cluster of players you can get at each position in hockey.

In this draft, I view the significant drop off after ~13 and ~21 as a pretty significant consideration. Those charts are useful when you aren’t crossing more than 1 tier. I find them pretty useful after you pass the threshold where the quality of the draft has dropped. I don’t believe that’s the case here.

Mrazek retained would be a wonderful thing for the rest of the East. It’s not what Jersey needs

I believe Jersey could and should ask for a hell of a lot more than the 37th pick in this draft,

You could make the same argument for the value of a 50% retained Mrazek, that CHI should be asking a hell of a lot more for him. Behind one of the most poorly constructed, albeit intentionally, and injury riddled rosters in the history of the NHL, Mrazek was one of the best goalies in the league this past season. Imagine what he could do behind a team that can actually score and support him defensively.

You could make that argument. Whether other teams believe it or not is another story. I root for another team in the east and would love nothing more than to see a promising young team like Jersey neutered again by their goalie situation

I mean... the proof is in the pudding. You take the way he performed, and put him behind the best teams in the league, and people would be looking at him in a whole new light. He was a great up and coming goalie before a long injury plagued 5 years where he bounced from team to team with his career seemingly going down the drain. And he credits CHI's strength and conditioning staff for showing him exercises to get him healed and playing well again. Not only that, but his base stats and advanced metrics tell a story that should have been nearly impossible playing behind a defensively poor, injury plagued, young, and inexperienced team like CHI was this past season. Plus, he played WAY more games than he should have because Soderblom was not ready for the NHL and was put in just as much of a position to fail. Add to all of that that he would be coming in with a $2.25M cap hit for 2 years...

I think Mrazek at $2M is the exact philosophy that fits for NJ. Assume violent variability in goalie performance - but make careful bets.

If they are considering two options, Mrazek at $2M and a first round pick trade down or Markstrom at $3M and lose the first entirely I know which decision I’m making 10/10.
