The way I look at Jack Campbell is a few, not a lot, but a few teams just might take him as a backup with full double retention.
The one team I've looked at with a backup gap that will be in the market for a backup is Winnipeg. With that being said they can go out and get a backup for 800k to a million bucks, so if that's the case you do have to pay Winnipeg to take him even at 1.25m just because of the extra 100k they would manage to take a hit on if it doesn't work out and they have to bury Campbell. I view the jets as a perfect fit, because of their goaltending situation where they have a clear clear 1A with Connor H, and Campbell is a veteran guy who can take a few games and furthermore be a great locker room guy for the jets. Campbell has solid solid AHL numbers so if he can manage a .900 save percentage average for 20-25 games which I believe he can, then it would work. The prospect I believe the Jets would LOVE because the jets love big, strong, fast guys is Raphael Lavoie. He fits the Jets perfect player so well and I believe with him having a struggle to make the Oilers lineup, he can have a decent shot at Winnipeg's next year. He has 60pts with Bakersfield AHL last year and played first line minutes all year. He also was an AHL All Star last year.
The double retention is a big factor as there isn't many teams wanting to retain, or if they are, they would need to very much get incentives to take it. I look at none other than the Calgary Flames as the perfect fit to weaponize their cap space and make the Oilers pay for their cap problem. I think the Flames have made it clear that they want to quickly retool which means prospects they want, not so much picks, and as a result this is exactly why the Oilers like this deal. Bourgault, would be the prospect they send to the Flames, the Oilers former 2021 1st Round Pick, and Bourgault is probably ready in 2 years for sure. Quickens the timeline for the Flames up, and at the cost of 3.75 million over 3 years.
To finish off the Oilers pay 2.5 a million and prospects to avoid 3 years of buyout cost. This money will then be used in three years to add to the McDavid Contract. And who knows, if Winnipeg decides to buy him out, then so be it. Let me know what you think in the comments!

50% retention on 2.5 million (1.25 M) of Jack Campbell's Contract, then subsequently trading him to the Winnipeg.
If not Calgary, than someone else like Philly or Anaheim.
It's 50% retention for 3 whole years of a player from a completely different team. 1 year fine, but teams have their own guys to retain on. A B level prospect is not going to cut it
That's nowhere near what it would cost to get another team to retain 50% of Campbell and Calgary is the wrong team to ask it of.
You realize that Minnesota retained 1.875 for a 4th in the O'Reilly deal. I think you think cause it's the Oilers you wouldn't touch it, like I said previously there is a few teams who would take a prospect like this and retain 3.75 million. If not Calgary, sign the Ducks or Utah up.

You don't seem to realize (or have chosen to ignore) that O'Reilly was a pending UFA deadline deal making the actual dollars it cost Minnesota around 20% of that 1.875 million. In addition O'Reilly wasn't a cap dump, he had value and Toronto actually wanted him.
1/5 of 1.875 million for 1 year for a player a team wants vs 100% of 1.25 million for 3 full years for a cap dump is a huge difference. The mere fact it ties up a retention slot for 3 years would make it cost more even if the actual dollar value was less.
You did get one thing right though another reason Calgary wouldn't touch it is because it's the oilers. They aren't going to be doing the oilers favors.
