Team: 2024-25 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 8, 2024
Published: Jun. 8, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Despite the cap going up more than expected, the Rangers have a few RFAs who need to resign, so going big-name hunting is not possible. To manage the cap crunch realistically, I could see Brennan Othmann sliding onto the third line as a solid forechecking winger with some offensive upside. I also imagine the smaller but more offensive-minded Zac Jones playing well alongside the rougher physical defenseman in Trouba.

Regardless the Rangers NEED to acquire a better RW this offseason, but getting a player like Marchessault, Kane, Stamkos, or Guentzel with the cap remaining is impossible. Instead, I have the Rangers going for Sprong, a winger who plays with good energy and has a great shot on him who will (deservedly) look for a pay raise and more opportunities to showcase his worth.

Alternatively the Rangers could pursue guys like Arthur Kaliyev or Jonathan Berggren who need a fresh change of scenery and could be low-risk high-reward young guys and potentially sending Kakko's rights in exchange for those players.

*Contract extensions and the return on Kakko's RFA rights are up for debate, but those that I listed I consider to be the best case scenarios for the Rangers*

Additional Details:
The Rangers have Gabe Perrault and Brennan Othmann who, along with Alexis Lafreniere, will make it very hard for Kakko to find more ice time than he needs to develop. Dealing with injuries this year also didn't help him this season, but with a 40 point season last year and consistently strong defensive metrics, Chicago can acquire a cost-control asset with playoff experience for a second round pick they likely won't need with the prospect pool they have already managed to build.

Here’s my thing though, are the rangers even gonna qualify him? I feel comfortable with that price, but who are we bidding against? Maybe see if they’ll take a third round pick for him.

Why wouldn't they? He's a useful two-way 3RW.

He would be worth a 2nd if someone throws a sheet at him. I've have seen an article that suggests the Canes may do just that. Stay tuned.

I was thinking along the lines of they might just be done with him.

If they can get a respectable offer to trade him then yeah they will move him but they won't make an emotional decision to create a hole in their lineup. It has to make sense for them considering the cap situation being where it is right now.
