May as well trade Rielly for a defensive defenceman so we can make sure we have no puck movers at all. Getting hemmed in our own zone appears to be the dream of all leaf fans on here.

and who would be ur choice over lyubushking? Walker? liljegren? Roy? all too pricey, chatfield most likely stays with carolina or with an american team. Carrier is the only likely option with around 2.5m but hes not big which is 100% concerning for Treliving. Would have to trade a lil more for Clifton since the salary would have to be retained. Klingberg is a huge gamble and is a defensive liability. overall there really isnt anyone id feel comfortable with without having to trade

Montour would be a good add that will absolutely end up being a problem down the road. But he would solve some problems on the team. Roy for 4 or 5 years would be a solid solid add as well. Roy isn't all that offensive but he's a good skater and can make a good pass or skate it out himself.

Liljegren should absolutely be brought back. Keefe failed him and all the other young defenceman he's had. Timmins as well is cheap depth that could flourish. The defence the Leafs ran in the playoffs did some things better than other versions but they also offered zero offence beyond Rielly. When McCabe is your 3rd best puck mover and he's light years better than 4th placed guy, you have a major problem on defence. The Leafs had almost no transition down the stretch and into the playoffs. A lot of that had to do with the defence not have anyone capable of helping create offence. It was a dump and chase defence for a highly skilled offense that wanted to enter the zone with control.

you're joking right? we wouldn't have the cap space to sign Montour... can we be realistic? That would also be very risky. Roy is not good defensively he had 55 giveaways and only 12 takeaways this season. He was also on the ice for 13 goals against in 5 games in the playoffs. How is he good defensively? This player is terrible and has been overvalued by non hockey fans. And by resigning liljegren the Maple Leafs would only be hurting Themselves as he is injury-prone and didn't do anything in the playoffs. He was decent defensively but he doesn't show up during tough matchups and doesn't do much offensively. He's also going to want 3.5 - 4M which is too much for what he's doing in the playoffs. Timmins is another gamble but only a 7th defenseman. I agree that the Leafs didn't have much transition but I also don't like overpaying for players who don't deserve it and that would be hurting us defensively or in the long run. Rielly was really good defensively and had 1 hiccup that ended the series but yeah he should have been better offensively and there's nothing we can do about it because of his no-move clause. I don't want that same problem with another signing.

Much of this is wrong.

The Leafs in fact can afford Montour. They have loads of cheap forwards who should be given a chance so spending on forwards is a mistake.

Roy is a solid defenceman. Giveaways are a terrible measure of a players effectiveness. Especially for a defenceman. Chipping the puck off the glass and out is a give away. So getting the puck out of danger is smart but still a give away. The King's got horrible goaltending in the playoffs and also McDavid. He's not overrated, he's a solid top 4 defenceman.

Liljegren has had some injury troubles for sure but that's often luck. Hopefully he gets some because he is in fact a good player. This past playoffs he was injured, it was clear as day, his skating was hampered for sure. He absolutely can't command 3.5-4 million, he's never done anything to warrant that. I suppose you could be bold and give him a long term deal over 4 and I bet it never looks bad and likely looks fantastic down the road. Keep him.

But as for this proposed Blueline, you have Rielly and Klingberg as the only players who can move the puck. 2 pairs that will get hemmed in all the time and Rielly. No lessons were learned from this past years terrible defence

our defence was great last year. Our forwards were the problem. We couldn't score any goals lmao. We cant pay marner, matthews, and tavares a total of 33 million dollars to score 3 goals in 7 games

Last seasons defence was the worst it has been for years. 2nd worst among playoff teams. And it was just slightly better than Tampa who was last. They did not have a good defence.

you're wrong dude. Boston was only scoring 2.5 goals in the series even though we had Samsonov as our goalie. The star players are the problem if they can't score above that lmao.
