Couldn’t they have just hired the cap friendly guys to build out what they need and leave them with the website? Seems dumb to go through the extra hoop of buying the website

Not really because the goal of the purchase is to cut out the ability for other NHL teams to use the services they are looking specifically to control.

I'm looking everywhere and I can't find anything that says what you found, so if you can post the link here that would be greatly appreciated.

But all 32 teams and the league have sign off on it and they did because it was run by a 3rd party. Unless the other team have complete access, they aren't going to sign off on it. Even then you'll probably have a group of teams that won't sign off on it as long as another team owns it. If the Caps bring it back online it won't have the any of the features that make the site great.

Friedman on today's 32 thoughts podcast said the Caps wanted the tools and infrastructure. In addition, they may be hiring Zrim and Davis from CapFriendly as part of the deal.

He also reiterated that the site will shut down.
