How about we sign this deal after next year?

I've seen a lot of Marner for Seth Jones trades that end up with Jake McCabe and Seth Jones being a pair in Toronto. Didn't we already see that not work in Chicago? I found a stat on from Mike Stephens on twitter that in the season the Leafs traded for McCabe, his partner was Seth Jones. McCabe led the Hawks in plus/minus at +7 and Seth Jones was a -22 at the time of the trade. I know +/- isn't a great stat, but that doesn't sound like a good pair...

I respectfully disagree with @chihawk and @exo2769 here. I think we take that. That leaves a gaping hole at RD but the return to Toronto for a 90 point per season player is insane. Allan hasn't touched the NHL yet and may only be a 3rd pairing NHLer, tops 2nd pairing. Raddysh I think showed himself last year. The two coming back are signing rights so if Chicago doesn't want them, don't sign/qualify them they'll become UFAs. So it's Jones + 2nd for Marner? I take that.

Getting out of the jones contract alone is worth it. It will only get harder to move as time goes on. You don’t want that anchor of a contract when Chicago is ready to compete in a few years

It all depends on the contract marner expects. Anything more than 11 per and I'm out.

Either I didn't notice the title (obviously for a 1 year rental chicago declines), but if there is an extension it depends how much. I wouldn't want Marner at $12M or more for 8 years as example

The part in bold is where I take exception. We can make our team better without also making it worse. I'd FAR rather sign Jake Guentzel to a 4 year $12M deal than Marner to an 8 Year $12M deal because we don't need to sacrifice one aspect of our team (defensively we're a lot worse) for another. We can simply just get a better team.

You've never watch the Hawks play once...clearly. We could say the same thing about the Nylander contract. EVERYONE said he should sign an 8 year $9.5M deal at the beginning of last season, but he goes out...in a contract year and starts the year lights out. Gets his extension and then goes pointless in 7 of his next 10 games and doesn't sniff the production level he started with.

Nah. Hawks have so much cap space and in 2-4 years when they start getting their guys into their 2nd level contracts the cap is likely going up more and more and $9.5 will be tolerable. Hawks also have so many late 1st and 2nd rounders who are developing well enough that you can supplement the big contracts with the ELCs.

If he is ever traded there's always retention or just find an LTIR like Vegas.

There's always free agency. Theoretically if they made this trade they'd have their RW1 and would need to go shopping for an RD2. Still leaves a hole at RD1 but Levshunov will becoming soon wink

Not sure who Nolan Allen is ifhes a good prospect. but if hes a so-so prospect. If im Chicago im using that framework for a trade 100000%, having marner to play with Bedard would be nice.
Just as a leafs fan I see Jones contract as a worse contract. hes at 9.5 til hes36 years old...Hes already going to be 30. Right now he may be OK at 9.5 on the right team but in a couple years we got anotherTavares contract going. If im giving up Marner whos only 27 , an all star, consistent 100 point average player im dropping some of that extrafrom chicago and having them retain a little bit of salary.
hes not that stay at home good defensive guy the leafs need imo. Id much rather Tanev at 5M

I watch a decent number of hawks games. I’m also a jackets fan so I know all about jones. He’s not the same player anymore unfortunately

For reference, there are no scouting reports on CapFriendly for him. He was a bit of a reach draft choice by Stan Bowman. Drafted 1st round 32nd overall in 2021. He's 6'2 almost 200lb LHD who is a stay at home type player. Comps at the time were Brent Seabrook but without the Seabrook ceiling. I imagine he could make his way up to LD2 but more likely a really good LD3. He is doing well in AHL but hasn't made it to NHL yet as Hawks have a logjam at LD. He's a B prospect. Likely to see NHL time.

Jones put up some pretty good offensive numbers his first season with Hawks. I wonder if/when the Hawks start to become a playoff team if his stats and analytics improve. Right now they're treating him like a Duncan Keith asking him to carry the D corps but if he ends up in a RD2/PP2 role I think that'll suit him and he'll be an above average RD2.

I'd still rather have Vlasic/Jones for the next 6 years and allow Levshunov proper development time too. I get he would be a #2 OA pick and all, but he's still a kid. He and Rinzel will be fighting for a roster spot in a year from now and that's a healthy competition. One will win and the other to Rockford. Then when Murphy's contract is up...you're hoping they're both ready. If each of them is not ready...then you sign a vet RD to a 1 year deal.

Completely agree with your assessment. I'm just playing devils advocate. But it sounds more and more they're going to draft Levshunov. Some folks say he's NHL ready now but I bet/am hoping he goes back to MSU for 2nd year. Then he can be ready for 25-26, Rinzel in AHL for a year and in 26-27 you'll have Levshunov-Jones-Rinzel on the right.
