Caps werent allowed to keep CapFriendly open

Created by: brady_t12
Team: 2024-25 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2024
Published: Jun. 12, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
“One team told me that even if [the Capitals] wanted to [keep the site open], they wouldn’t have been allowed to,” Friedman said. “The NHL frowns on the existence of sites like this. They consider it proprietary information so the Capitals couldn’t keep it open if they wanted to. The league would say you cannot be partner to this and have it be public and also you couldn’t make any money from it on any ads.” - Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts

Continue to be angry at the caps. Someone else would've bought the site and it would've been closed immediately - caps wanted it to stay open and the NHL said no, compromise was made to keep it open until July 5th, through the draft. That's probably why the deal hasn't closed already. I just wanted to make sure the reasonable people had the opportunity to learn about this. I couldn't care less if people continue to hate post about the caps, you just look like clowns.

the big word there was if....of COURSE they wouldn't want to keep it open. they're buying a service that they could access for free, there's a reason for that. well, there's a lot of reasons for that, but one of them is that they get to be the only one that has it.

That is the one thing I noticed too, but I figured that the reason they were told that was because they at LEAST pondered the idea of being able to keep the site open for the public. And if the caps hadn't done it, they would've gotten screwed when another team bought it.

Shouldn't be too hard for another site operator to clone this platform.

As long as Nhl teams make player salaries public knowledge and it is already public knowledge of roster moves and prospects and Draft selections what is the big deal >?

This site is just a public forum of public knowledge database.

i find it far more likely that they said, "hey NHL PR, any chance you would leak the concept that you told us we couldn't keep it open so people don't hate us? thanks."

there was never a chance they kept it open.

Welp, they didn't have a choice anyway. This was inevitable. I'm just happy the caps did it - my favorite team benefits and everyone hates them already anyway.

Some people spend their entire day on this site and don't have any other outlet so the caps are the devil (not from New Jersey)...

Obviously there were other teams bidding on this and that simply the Caps had the best deal for these guys. I was bummed when Wuest sight was closed but found CF. Now PuckPedia or someone else needs to invest to become the new number 1 for this kind of thing. But, the next big thing will be bought by another team in the future etc. PP is ok but too many clicks to get info and no ACGM of course. For a great view on what the deal is from a big picture perspective, go to The Hockey Guy on You Tube. He had, in my opinion, a smart, mature, honest take on this subject.

Umm... maybe you missed the entire quote, but it literally says "even if [the Capitals] wanted to [keep the site open], they wouldn’t have been allowed to." That's the definition of not having a choice lmao.

Wilson deal sucks, cheers.

Another site will open and probably have an exclusive paid membership.

Maybe the NHL.com should create one.

Owners and players wouldn't care then, as long as they get a monthly check.

LOL

Haven't watched THG's take (haven't followed him much over the second half of the season because life gets in the way) but I will check it out, thanks for bringing that up.

CapFriendly going down just gives me a reason to make a twitter account to interact with my favorite people from the site.

Except the NHL doesn't think they should be in the business of publishing this info. SMFH... Bettman is such an idiot.

I sort of agree with the whole "let's keep player salaries a secret from the public" idea, because media/fan angst or joy for certain players, solely based on how cheap or expensive they are, is dumb.

Only the Nhl and NhlPA should have those details, but in the salary cap Era, fans are interested in knowing how much money their team still has to spend.

Before the Salary Cap Era, I couldn't care less if the NYR's were paying B. Holik $9 million a year or the NYI gave A. Yashin a 10 year contract.

But now we do care !

I guess what I don’t understand is why did any NHL team need or want to buy this site? There’s zero NEW information on here and if they wanted the platform why didn’t they just create one internally?

Maybe a mis-understanding, believing a profit can be made, but Bettman said no, that the team owner can't use public Nhl knowledge to make a profit.

It sounds like multiple teams wanted to buy CapFriendly and it was gonna get bought by someone. The caps either had the best offer or jumped on it the quickest. Lots of teams are gonna get screwed if they aren't quick to put something together - puckpedia is the best alternative available publicly.
