Carlson for JVR, Grubauer to NYI, Franson

Created by: brady_t12
Team: 2017-18 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2017

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Caps are lacking a top 6 forward unless Vrana can step in and put up 20 goals. I trust Vrana to play well in the NHL this year, but not well enough to be given full top 6 minutes. Allow the 6 wingers on the top 3 lines to switch around throughout the season to attempt to develop some chemistry and find lines that click well.

The defensive core gets worse this year. But that's okay. The caps have an influx of talented defensemen coming up in the system. Johansen, Siegenthaler, Hobbs, Williams, Djoos, Bowey, amongst others have potential ranging from top pair offensive defensemen to shut down top 4 defensemen. Djoos may be able to shine with Franson, or maybe he'll mesh well with Orpik, who has a lot of size that Djoos lacks. Franson may only be able to hold down a bottom pair position, which in that case, Bowey will get some harder minutes. After this year, the caps will be getting one or two defensemen coming up ready to take on an NHL role for the next 2-3 seasons. They will have as many as 7 defensemen able to play top 4 minutes. So, we sacrifice the quality of the defensive core in 2017-18, but in turn we get an asset back to fit an offensive need (which is a department the caps lack top prospects in) for this season.

  2. 2018 5th round pick (NYI)

  1. Grubauer, Philipp
  2. 2018 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
The reason why I chose the Isles: Halak is not consistent anymore, and Grubauer is a solid option for this year. They can choose to trade him away after this year if they don't wish to retain him. He can start or Greiss can start and the other is more than qualified to be backup. This will also push both goalies to play their best to earn minutes on the ice. Grubauer has no chance of pushing for starter status on a majority of teams this year, but that's only due to every team addressing their needs for a goalie. The isles may split Greiss and Grubauer's starts 41/41. Halak won't remain in New York after this season when his contract ends.

I see the merit in that TOR trade, but now that defense looks awful. I also have my doubts towards Copley being a NHL-goaltender.

Yea, the Leaf trade has merit. But back up goalies...and that's what Grub is, doesn't warrant a first rounder. Isles can live with Halak and his contract for a year. He's actually a good enough backup, and next year they will cap space to search for another goalie and still have their picks.

I've thought about this kind of swap for Carlson and JVR before but I think that defense core is just so weak as it is that to remove Carlsson could really hold this team back.

Copley played extremely well in the AHL, and he's likely to be the backup in 18-19 regardless. This team isn't a cup contender, but they're pushing to the playoffs and getting some younger players minutes as well as experience in the playoffs. We're sacrificing this years D-core, but it will be fantastic in the long run. I'm not worried about seeing a top 4 of Orlov-Niskanen, Djoos-Bowey in 18-19. Plus there will be more support in the coming years

Well Grubauer is better than any current free agent goalie. I'd also argue he's worth a 1st round pick, but the 3rd and 5th pick swap kinda balances out the value ever so slightly. I know Halak had a stint in the AHL last season and no team picked him up off waivers. I'd imagine the Isles want to build the best team they can for this year and for the future to give Tavares more incentive to stay. Having a goalie like Grubauer makes their future look brighter. Plus, the Isles will be able to sign him to a decent contract when Halak's money comes off the Isles cap hit after this season. Or they can flip him for another first round pick at the draft.

Isles have Soderstrom coming in next year and Sorokin coming in like 2-3 years, they pass.

Brady: The. reason Halak was put on waivers and unclaimed was because of 4.5m contract....not because of his play. Yes, can debate the value of Grub in a trade deal but I doubt if the Isle want to. be paying over 9m in goalies this year. If I'm a championship calibre team (like the Caps) I won't want to go to a season and hopefully a long playoff run with Copley has my unproven backup.

Just a side note, I think the Caps should have called Kutz's bluff about going to Russian. If he had left, still would have Johansen and 3.3m in cap space.

I think Carlson is worth more than JVR, and I'd be concerned, with sending Grubauer to the team that has Greiss, that Kolzig might go next. But, then, I googled for news on Kolzig's goalie coaching career, and couldn't find anything in the last two years. He's appearing at the next Caps Fanfest as an Alumni, rather than as staff, so good luck to them all, and here's hoping Kolzig gets another shot in the majors! For those keeping score at home, Greiss and Grubauer are the best active German goaltenders, and recent Caps development coach Olaf Kolzig is the best all time (http://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/nationality/german-nhl-goalies-career-stats.html).

Leafs traded a #1 (30th pick) and a #2 for Andersen, so the trade isn't out of the question.
As a Leaf fan, I like the Carlson trade.

But if were to have left, we have no #2 center who will become the undisputed #1 center in a few years, all for nothing since he can come back to the NHL as a UFA. The 3.3M in cap space would be nice, but we essentially looked at it as either have Kuznetsov and a couple extra picks or just MOJO (even though we still could have swung a trade for Orpik by throwing in a sweetner).

As far as the Carlson trade goes, it's an interesting dynamic to look at. While we do have a ton of good defense prospects, I think Bowey, Djoos, Hobbs, Siegenthaler and Johansen are the only ones with top 4 potential. We should have two of them on our roster this season, and I think it's a better idea to let Carlson mentor Djoos for this season. In terms of the forwards, I think we just need to give some of the kids a chance. We need to give guys like Vrana, Barber and Walker chances to show what they can do for us. Look at how Pittsburgh won Cups. Bringing up players instead of being worried about what they can do (Sheary, Rust, Guentzel). Caps need to create a similar system during our retool on-the-fly. Giving the young guys a chance is the best way to do so

Hurting the little defensive strength the Caps have to maybe improve the top-6 isn't a good move. The Grubi trade does make sense, but I'd see it as a midseason/deadline trade.
