I think you're overestimating Detroit's desperation. They have better options than this when you figure Franzen into LTIR.

Even with LTIR used on Franzen, Detroit is right up against the cap ceiling with Athanasiou still to sign.
I'm not saying Detroit couldn't trade with other teams, but trading a $4 million backup on a rebuilding team is a good way to free up some space.
Maybe what I was asking for was a bit too rich, but I think CGY could replenish a pick or two by looking at something like this.

We don't ever want to get into a spot similar to Det. I brought in Nyquist on one of the teams I created a while back. I think he would be a perfect LW to play with Backlund and Frolik.
That way Tkachuk could be paired with Bennett and Ferland to create the "crash 'n Bang" line that we need.
