Flames - Det Cap Trouble

Created by: RipperRob
Team: 2017-18 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 9, 2017
Published: Aug. 9, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Detroit is in cap hell and has 3 goalies (2 expensive). CGY could take advantage, upgrade their backup Goalie on one year contract (trade him for a pick later), and get a draft pick/prospect for helping Detroit out?
I was considering targeting Nyqvist - I just don't think he is the RW CGY needs and would rather have the prospect and replenish the picks.

I think you're overestimating Detroit's desperation. They have better options than this when you figure Franzen into LTIR.

Thanks for the comment
This is the article I was basing my idea on:
http://thehockeywriters.com/red-wings-facing-significant-salary-cap-issues/
Even with LTIR used on Franzen, Detroit is right up against the cap ceiling with Athanasiou still to sign.
I'm not saying Detroit couldn't trade with other teams, but trading a $4 million backup on a rebuilding team is a good way to free up some space.
Maybe what I was asking for was a bit too rich, but I think CGY could replenish a pick or two by looking at something like this.

We don't ever want to get into a spot similar to Det. Holland stated yesterday that they would be back in two years at which time they are going to need a proven goalie and Howard will be 35 maybe do the deal using Howard and some retention, but there has to be some more upside for Calgary other than a second for fourth.

I brought in Nyquist on one of the teams I created a while back. I think he would be a perfect LW to play with Backlund and Frolik.
That way Tkachuk could be paired with Bennett and Ferland to create the "crash 'n Bang" line that we need.
