Created by: dennisb
Team: 2017-18 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 30, 2017
Published: Aug. 15, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
FLA (give up/ get: Trocheck, Demers/ Kessel, Corrado) aquire a scorer/playmaker to make a push and compete in the playoffs, as well as a new marketing tool in Kessel. Also a cap relief with sending Demers.

NJ (give up/ get: Henrique, Santini/ Maatta, Demers, Archibald) get 2 defenders signed long-term to improve the D corps of the rebuilding team and a winger depth addition.

PIT would have to improve D and bottom 6 at TDL. Propose trades with 1) WPG: Sheary, Pouliot, high pick(s), Bluegers for Enstrom (UFA-1, perhaps needed some $$ retained for a pick), Lowry (RFA-1), Dano (RFA-1) and 2) VGK: 5th for Engelland (UFA-1) with the lines like

Guentzel-Crosby-Dano/Sprong/ZAR
Henrique-Malkin-Rust
Hagelin-Trocheck-Hornqvist
Wilson-Lowry-Reaves/Rowney/Kuhnhackl

Enstrom-Letang
Dumoulin-Schultz
Cole-Hunwick/Engelland/Santini

Why would we trade Kessel for a decent third line center and a guy who gets flipped for another center plus Maatta in the package...I think I have seen it all

We've lost two centers who served PK in Cullen and Bonino and I've replaced them with those who can kill penalties, be 50p+ forwards at 3C or produce more on top6 if needed. Last season in FLA Trocheck a decent 3rd liner as you've called him was a leader in points, time on ice (20 mins+ total, 2:43 PP, 1:55 SH). He hits and blocks, can play either wing or center. So he can be either a winger on top6, a third-line center as you've said or replace Crosby/Malkin if injured. You might tell me that it is not important but he is 24 year old and is signed till 2022 when he'll be 29. A cap hit of 4.75, much money for that kind of composition? Henrique is also a versatile forward who can play a scoring winger or a third line center producing 25g/25a and killing penalties. NJ needs defenders so that's what I'm giving.

You tell me you've seen that all? You can rewind it to 2022 then when Malkin turns UFA at 36 and Trocheck substitudes him being 29. I'd be eager to have him here before that time and for what he brings would obviously be glad to pay the price. By the way I really don't see Kessel producing at the same level till the end of his contract, maybe a season or two at maximum to show his speedy game that suites.

I wasn't sure about the FLA deal, but when you break it down it's Kessel and Maatta (some OKish prospects) for Henrique, Santini, and Torcheck ... Looks really solid.

2 very versatile players who are not rentals, play both sides of the ice and put up very respectable numbers playing on teams that might not be as talented as the Pens ... and very promising young defender with NHL time ... Only thing I would say is the D does look a bit inexperienced with Santini, but with Ruwedel and Pouliot you should be able to be in a play off spot till a deadline deal.

Enstrom with some retention should work, though I question his health since he hasn't played full seasons. I'd like to see that move done 2 or 3 weeks before the deadline to get him some games in before the deadline.

I'm not sure Engelland would be able to keep up.

There is so many options for lines, especially once the WPG deal you propose gets worked out, it's scary. Even with 87 or 71 out of the line up we have a better center core than like 75% of the league.

I know those trades might look precarious but I did that to make it solid and for every party being happy enough to accept. I think it could help to get along like house on fire. The only issue there could be is players with clauses to accept that trades. While I don't know what might be on Kessel's mind Demers has just rejected a move to Vancouver. He might want to be on a competetive team but hey NJ now looks good on forwards. And now adding Maatta and Demers transits them from having just a single TOP4 D (Severson) into a solid TOP4 (Maatta-Severson, Moore/Greene-Demers). It could be real fun to watch this team and be on this team these coming years might be tempting.

I added Engelland as I thought we needed another shutdown def to be able to have another option in shutdown pairing just in case. Dumoulin-Cole-Hunwick-Engelland, pick two. I didn't reasearch on it much. Saw Enstrom and Engelland are pending UFA's and was happy with that... Well Engelland is yet not a true legend in Pitt but could become one. He deserved a Cup with Pitt not less than the Sedins did that for 'couver haha. Well seriously that might be no more than an opportunity for Sullivan to utter "Release the Kraken!!" and make it more scary for the other teams and more fun for fans to watch the playoffs. Would be ok with 5th as the price for that.
