Obviously I am not hoping anyone is hurt, but if McDavid goes down, or they have to shake up lines and Drai is on a line with any two other guys I don't think he is an 8.5 mill player. He is an absolute stud, but at 8.5 million there will surely be a few years out of the 8 that the contract is looking pretty bad.

8.5 for a top-line center who can dominate with the second-line is worth it. 8.5 for a winger for the best player in the world, who could turn Nail Yakupov and Benoit Pouliot into top level scorers, is far too much.

McDavid + Draisatl are probably better than Crosby + Malkin at the same age. What's crazy are the jumps in price between RFA and UFA years.

Salary cap and salary distribution over the roster feel different. I doubt the cap goes up in the next 10 years like it has for the last 10. Seems like a few forward stars get all the money + term and everyone else is replaceable.

I can't fault the Oilers on this deal, even if developing circumstances lead to it ruining the team.
Actually, this deal is less about McDavid + Draisatl + Talbot + ... This deal puts pressure on Russell and Lucic who have both term, no-trade clauses, and depending on the depth chart possibly expensive contracts.

I'm glad this deal is done, now there's a lot less reason for every agent to delay contracts for their RFAs.

umm that's how it should be. Players like Drai/McDavid should be making the money instead of players like Russell/Hanzal/Bonino/etc. getting massively overpaid as UFAs when they are all replaceable. It's a scary fact to face because it's new but I love this. Old mentality was to rip off RFAs and overpay for UFAs and now we are seeing an appropriate change from RFAs getting paid what they should and UFAs making less (as 90% of them should). Paid on present value and future value instead of old UFAs getting paid for past performance is a great sign. Maybe this signals a change of mindset for GMs in the NHL and the collusion can begin to stop and we don't have to see $4M contracts given out to players like Kucherov/Arvidsson while players like MDZ/Gagner/Alzner cash in over them.

For the 2018-2017 season, Edmonton has only 13 roster players making $60.7M. 1 Goalie, 5 x Dmen, 7 x Fwds. That leaves $14.3M to sign RFAs, Strome, Slepyshev, Caggiula, Pakarinen, Brossoit, Benning and Darnell Nurse. Still short a full roster. Imagine if any of them have a breakout season, Oilers are cooked and will be forced to part ways with RNH.

Hard to say if this is an overpayment. He did put up 51 points in 72 games as a 19-20 year old without McDavid most of the season before.
A 2 year bridge deal might have been the best bet to be SURE he can produce big. But the Oilers took a risk, imo a small one, to lock him up for under 9 AAV for the 8 years of his prime. Chances are he will produce even better next year and after that but that's not a sure thing.
8.5 AAV could seem high now but in 4 years it is going to look great. Its all about the term here.

Drai played with McDavid for two thirds of the playoffs. I disagree with LazarBeams, but don't B.S to support your point.

Really hate that teams are afraid to give out offer sheets. Drive up the price for other teams so they have less cap space down the road, and if they don't match, at least you get a great player.

OK you might have a great player. Let's say you signed Draisaitl for 9m. You have Leon but not 9m and you don't have 4 first rounders. By no making an offer sheet, you get to spend 9m on the players plus you have your four first rounders.
So while folks can say "teams are afraid of to make an offer (sheet)". To me it's bad economics and bad future team building by making almost all offer sheets.

While I would agree in the open market economy, yes. I disagree in Organized pro sports. The RFA years are a huge reason a team like the Canes, Jackets, Ducks, and other "non tier 1" markets can roster talented players and compete, making the league more exciting and prosperous for all. The moment 21 year olds cost the same as 28 year olds is the moment you increase league disparity and get a league like the NBA where there are only 2-4 possible champions each year.

Yes, the cap helps, but many teams still can't spend up to that

How many trades did they make before? Philly GM has changed since then as well. Who cares about relations with your competitors? If an offer sheet is good for your team, then GM's should use them., If the money vs. picks doesn't make sense, then don't do it. It worked for San Jose years ago, the signed Hjalmarson to an offer sheet, that Chicago matched, then San Jose was able to steel Niemi, because Chicago couldn't afford both. Niemi was a solid goalie, coming off a Stanley Cup win at the time.
