2019/20 Cap Situation

Created by: JimCarrey
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 17, 2017
Published: Aug. 17, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Signing Doughty in the summer of '19... as long as cheap prospects can fill secondary holes there is room...but it would be tight. Even if said prospects are unable/not ready there are always cheap veteran free agent options...see Jagr, Vanek, Franson etc. this year

BTW with Marleau, Martin coming off the books, there would be space to sign Dermott, Grunstrom, Bracco, etc

And if there isn't room for all of them to get resigned, we hope the Leafs continue to draft well and bring in new, young prospect on cheap ELC's. I think that speaks volumes towards the importance of not trading away all of your draft picks for rentals, etc. I believe this is what management means when they speak about not just building a team to win a cup, but a team to keep winning for a long time

Nice work.
Shows it's possible....
Thoughts:
- Doughty could command $10M but I'm hoping a little less, seeing Weber and Subban with $8-9M Cap hits. This all assumes the optimistic scenario that Kings don't just lock him up well before he becomes a UFA.
- Decent chance Marleau and Martin are moved before 2019/20, although it could cost prospects/picks to do it. If they were moved, it would pave the way to keep Gardiner if Leafs choose too but it would be tight because///
....Biggest sleeper cap issue may be the 6 RFA's needing contracts in 2020...

Nylander' deal would be 7 years because he was a RFA the previous year.

The next year comes off the books but look at those RFAs that need to be signed. The cap is there for for a reason. And you really want to have Doughty taking up so much cap in his mid 30s. Is he going to be that much of difference making in the next two years and for the following six. It's not 2012.
