You're (Vancouver) 2 years away from step one. Can't go and sign some of these cheap vets and turn them into draft picks until you tear down your own roster. Vancouver goes into this season with their current line up and while they won't make the playoffs, they won't be a top 5 lottery pick either. If they are serious about a rebuild and want to eventually follow your step by step directions they have a tear down to do. Trading for anything other than picks and prospects (ie: your Edler/Gallagher trade) will only delay the process. Edler, Tanev, Sedin's, Erickson should be moved and moved quickly. (None will be around when Van. becomes a contender again) Building on the fly is an equation that hasn't worked in the past and coming into next years draft there are loads of teams that see the #1 overall pick in their sights.

Picking up serviceable vets on 1 year deals would be ideal. Hudler would be perfect.

People keep saying that the Sedins and Erickson need to be moved, but seem to forget, you need to find someone to take them.
