I believe I read that you can go over the cap as long as it's only signing bounces

I am pretty sure that is performance bonuses, but they are counted as a cap hit the following year no matter what.

That is performance bonuses. the overage from those goes on the next year's cap hit. Signing bonuses aren't bonuses but guaranteed money paid at the start of every season as part of the salary. so his contract total would be 3.5 but 2.5 he would get at the beginning of the season with salary paid over the rest of the year being 1 mil.
