Description
A lot to unpack here so I will go trade-by-trade. Note: The Neal and Garrison trades I think happen during the season around the deadline, possibly some of the other moves would make more sense then, but not necessarily.

Detroit Deal- For Vegas this is all about getting the 1st and Saarijarvi, not to mention the 3rd. Helm has some minor value as a bottom 6 player, but he's over paid and entering his 30's.

Why is Detroit giving up this much and only getting a rental in Stoner and a late round pick? B/c clearing Helm and Ericsson saves Detroit over $8M a year for 3 years, plus an additional $3.8M for Helm's 4th year. That is huge for this team that will start to have to pay some of their younger talent like Larkin and Mantha next year (plus the AA situation). While not actual cap relief since they could LTIR him, Franzen's contract still burdens Detroit from a budgetary standpoint. Ridding Det. of that financial commitment could allow them to be more willing to spend money on front loading deals going forward.

Rangers trade: Rangers add a good cheap 3C who is under control for 3 years.

Vegas gets a couple good picks and an intriguing prospect.

Penguins trade: Pens finally get their 3C for the next two years.

Vegas gets another good pick and an okay prospect.

Capitals trade: Caps get out from under Orpik's contract and in return have the cap space for a full roster and any additional upgrades this year. Plus McNabb should be better than Orpik and Merrill gives them another defensive option as well. Next year the cap space can really come into play as it could allow the Caps to retain Carlson (or make other moves for another run).

Vegas takes on Orpiks contact, but they do add a 1st round pick and a good defensive prospect in Hobbs. Hobbs could push for a role this year though would likely start in the minors at least.

Chicago deal- The Blackhawks need some serious help on their blue line and don't have a ton of money to spend. This deal could happen closer to the deadline, but still expect Vegas to retain some salary.

Vegas gets a 3rd rounder for their troubles.

Ottawa deal- The Senators get out from Bobby Ryan's last 5 years of his deal. That money not only will help Ottawa re-sign Stone and Turris next offseason, but it will definitely help clear the books for Karlsson's new deal 2 years from now. In addition to the significant cap savings, they land a top 4 defender in Sbisa and a depth defender as well.

From the Vegas perspective, tying themselves down to Ryan for the next 5 years is a bit of a risk, but he does add a respectable veteran presence to the team that can help some of the young kids develop. Also, landing a pair of 1st rounders and a solid prospect makes this a risk worth taking.

Edmonton trade- For the Oilers this is all about creating cap space going forward and the best way to do that is by moving RNH. Adding Kassian's nearly $2M a year also helps for the next couple of years. In return they get a good rental winger in Perron who can fit on one of the top 2 lines, and Washington's 1st round pick. It's a fair return for Nugent-Hopkins, and should help the Oilers keep their core intact.

For Vegas they move one of their best rentals, plus they take advantage of their extra draft picks and ship what should be a late 1st to the Oilers. In return they get 4 years of RNH who has proven himself to be a good player in the league and still could have some upside and growth.

Anaheim trade- The Ducks will look to go on one more Cup run before their core really starts their decline. Neal is a great winger to add to one of the top two lines and really deepens their scoring talent.

In return Vegas lands a 1st rounder and another solid prospect.

-------------------------

In the end Vegas trades away their rentals and depth on defense and at center as well as some future cap space to reshape their system and add a ton of draft assets.

Not all of the prospects or picks will pan out of course, but with so many added to the system they have a lot more in the way of future assets.

Though he is technically a rental I would look to extend Marchssault long term if he continues to play like he did a year ago. If something can't be agreed to, trade him away at the deadline as well.

Though eating up this much cap space can be a risk, Vegas probably wasn't going to be super aggressive in free agency the next year or two anyways. There should be plenty of money to re-sign their RFAs and any UFAs that they want to keep.

Abseloutely no way Edmonton does that. All the other trades are fine though.

Perron and a 1st seems like pretty decent value for RNH at full freight (and obviously Edmonton doesn't want to retain anything).

I get Detroit wanting to find cap space, but I don't think this works for them. Also, I've followed them long enough to know Kenny Holland would never pull that trigger. I'm struggling to find a way to fix that deal too. It's difficult.
