Yes, but that's where the second bolded part of my quote comes into effect.

Let's say GM #1 owns Player Alpha. Player Alpha has a cap hit of $8M. GM #1 can trade Player Alpha to GM #2 and retain 50% of his contract, which reduces his cap to $4M. GM #2 can also trade Player Alpha to any other GM that is not GM #1, and has the option to retain 50% of his current cap hit (the $4M). In the end, Player Alpha can end up with a cap hit of $2M. No more retentions can be placed on this player after that.

All in all, you do have the option of retaining Ennis's contract one more time, to a maximum amount of 50% of his current cap hit. If you choose to trade and retain 50% of his current cap hit, you would be retaining $1.150M and his new cap hit would be the same amount.

Hope that's helpful. If you have any other questions, I suggest you ask the CBA expert in @ricochetii Sticking Out Tongue

Edmonton Oilers

Dear all rebuilding teams:

The Edmonton Oilers are searching for a third line center with 1-2 years left on their contract. If you have anyone please contact me on my page or with Twitter. Thanks.

All in all, you do have the option of retaining Ennis's contract one more time, to a maximum amount of 50% of his current cap hit. If you choose to trade and retain 50% of his current cap hit, you would be retaining $1.3M and his new cap hit would be the same amount.

Hope that's helpful. If you have any other questions, I suggest you ask the CBA expert in @ricochetii Sticking Out Tongue

You rang?

No more than 50% of a player's salary can be retained in a single transaction.
No more than 2 such transactions over the course of a contract.

This implies that more than 50% is permitted (or up to 75% in total), but I can't think of a real world example off the top of my head to confirm it has been allowed, nor can I recall any instance of it being denied (or treated as a loophole).

I'm not sure why the capfriendly explanation leaves off the bolded. It's possible they know something I don't.

Any single player contract cannot be used in a "retained salary transaction" (trade) like this more than twice. (So if L.A. had agreed to retain some of Scrivens' salary when dealing him to Edmonton, the Oilers could not do the same if they traded him on this contract.)

Found this in an article

Tyler Ennis was traded by Minnesota to Toronto with 50 percent salary retained. The original cap hit was 4,600,000. The new cap hit is 2,300,000.

Tyler Ennis may have no more than 50 percent of his new cap hit (2,300,000) retained in another transaction. This means that he can be traded with a cap hit of no less than 1,150,000.

I really can’t believe I’m saying this but the Edmonton Oilers are listening on Connor McDavid. No promises he is moved as we will only accept the right offer.

Probably not since Matthews is going get a contract that is just a little cheaper than McDavid’s.

The way i see it, you get Matthews for 925 for this year and next compared to Mcdavids 12.5 or whatever you retain it too. But fair enough

We can't trade Turris until Jan 1 ... Brassard/Pageau aren't really 1Cs.
