What is the logic for Vancouver to give up a good young defenseman and forward for a rental player who is going to leave the team in free agency after the year?

Vanek brings the same game as JVR just a few years older at only 2 million, and if Vanek isn't playing there's youngsters ready to steal his spot. Also, the Canucks like both Granlund and Stecher.
There's probably a better trade partner out there.
